Maps of the Internet can help my students to visualise the new digital geography and resources that spread out from beyond their local computer. We can call these Cyberspaces or Cybermaps.

The Atlas of Cyberspaces charts the Internet and other emerging networks with some good graphical representations. It includes this good Teleglobe Network Map that spans the entire globe. Most impressive are the cable segments of the Pacific submarine network.

Construction of the Southern Cross network began in March 1998 and finished on 15 November 2000. This huge submarine cable network spans over 30,500 km. To boost optical signals, there are 500 optical repeaters (one every 40-70km) and nine terrestrial cable stations (two each in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the US mainland, and one in Fiji). This page describes the construction of this transpacific Internet network and has a good animated Pacific Internet map highlighting key undersea cable segments.
