I'm just back from seeing Return to the Forbidden Planet. Squeeeeeeeeee! How come I have never seen this before?! Okay, there are musicals with better plots, more depth and music written specifically for them rather than ganked from anywhere and everywhere, but I can't remember the last time I enjoyed the theatre so much!
It has Shakespeare, cheesy music, science-fiction, excellent widdly-squee and tentacles (purple tentacles at that!). What more could you want from an evening out?
The Cambridge University ADC are an excellent group. The casting was superb, voices were amazing, especially the girl playing Gloria. And the casting for Prospero - wow! What stage presence! Where else could you find "Tell Him", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Hey Mr Spaceman" all in one place?
Two downsides - firstly the vocals were too quiet and couldn't be heard over the instruments at points - possibly they were pushing the sound too hard and taking the vocals up any higher would have fed back. And secondly it was the last night of the run so I can't go back tomorrow and see it again.
