In six apartments. Six separate apartment buildings there should have been something. One of the managers had returned Axel’s call and they’d added the place to their list of tours today. The first one hadn’t seemed impressed with the thought of having ‘college students’ in her building. The sheer list of rules and limitations she’d presented them with had sent them running in the other direction. The second place smelled like cheese.
Not the good kind.
Stinky cheese.
The third apartment building had rats. Enough Rats to make the damn Piper nervous and Axel had backed out of it with Bart at the sheer sight of those beady little eyes.
The fourth had no bathroom. Bart demanded a bathroom.
The fifth came with people already living in it that were looking for ‘friends’. Since neither Axel nor Bart were interested in staying with anyone else, and neither liked the look of the pair eyeing them, they’d continued on.
The sixth was a nightmare. The paper thin walls seemed to even amplify the actions of the armours couple in the neighboring apartment and the poor landlord had apologized tiredly as he’d shown them out.
Checking out the building for the seventh and noting that they hadn’t been responded to because most of it wasn’t even there anymore. Sighing Axel was ready to upp the aparameters of their search and check out a more expensive venue of residence when a small handwritten sign in the window of a building caught his attention. ‘Apt for Rnt See 5A’
Shrugging Axel pulled Bart toward the building blinking at the distressed exterior of the older place but then gasping softly at the sight of the entrance doors. The glass was thick and bubbled, accented with metal swirls and abstract shapes. Grabbing the handle Axel pulled at it, pausing when the door didn’t open and then spotted the small intercom system. Buzzing 5A he shoved his hands in his pockets bouncing in place.
“Yes?” The voice was clipped and severe. Axel jumped a little at the crackle static burst of the intercom coming to life.
“Uh, we’re here about the apartment? Is there anyone around who can show it to us?”
There was no answer but an odd buzzing sound and Axel hastily grabbed the handle pulling the door open as they were admitted into the depth of the building.
The entry way was large. An area filled with mailboxes took up the left side and the right opened up to a hallway of apartments and a large staircase. An older elevator complete with cage was directly opposite them. The place had probably been considered ‘nice’ in it’s day. Now it had the flavor of faded glory.
