I have been discussing the war, ever since it started. Molly came home from school when it started and asked me if it was true--that we were at war. That was the beginning of the discussion, but I was careful not to put my own views about it into the discussion.
I grew up where, you weren't allowed to have your own views. What is funny is that, I am a Conservative and my whole family is Liberal. I didn't have to worry about displaying it by that point however--I was on my own at 18 and voting.
My family got into so many HOT DISCUSSIONS because I disagreed with their views--the only thing we agreed on was the fight for freedom. MY grandfather was a WWII Vet from the Navy. Patriotism was something no one ever questioned in that house.
When 9/11 happened, the pilot that was in the first plane was from our town--only a few miles from here and an area I had spent most of my teen years. They let the kids out early because, his kids were in class when it happened and they didn't want them to find out by seeing it on the television at the school.
I was so glad because, I wanted to talk to my kids about it myself. I did allow them to see the towers hit--but did NOT let them see the people jumping or anything that 'graphic'. I explained to them about how it was only a FEW bad men and not an entire religion or people.
We have so many in our town of Middle Eastern decent and many have been scrutinized because of it. I didn't want my kids to fall into that line of prejudice.
It's sad that, so many parents don't talk to their children any more.
