[Several months ago, the young Shinigami that was currently on patrol in Karakura Town was struck down on her first night on the job.
She had been close to defeating the large Hollow that was terrorizing the town, but had made a mistake and had instead been slashed across the chest, giving her a near-fatal wound and had torn apart her inner chain of fate, destroying her powers permanetly.
The battle had taken place close to Urahara's shop, so once he sensed the total absence of the Shinigami's reiatsu, he had stepped in and given the Hollow a final blow with his zanpakto.
Much to his surprise, the young Shinigami was still alive, but just barely.
He took her back to his shop, and with the healing powers of him and his assistants, keep the Shinigami from dying.
The Shinigami was unconscious for days, she had no inner healing powers of her own, so she was only recovering as fast as Urahara could heal her and the normal recovery rate of a regular soul.
Once the Shinigami awoke, Urahara told her of what had happened. He also said that there was a way for Shinigami to regain their powers, but unfortunately, she was not strong enough and that it would end in a painful death.
Her cell phone from the Soul Society was destroyed in the fight, but Urahara said that since her reiatsu had vanished, she would be registered as dead, and a new Shinigami would be sent in her place.
So she might as well make the best of her situation, and he had a gigai that would make her a human permanently.
While she healed, the group told her information about the human world and taught her a little more about reading and writing.
Sometimes Yoruichi would change into a cat to keep her company and comfort her. The two spent quite a few hours together like that.
Once she was well enough, she helped around the shop, acting as another of his assistants.
Soon, it would be time for school to start up again, so Urahara pulled some strings, acting as her uncle and got her into Karakura High and in the same classes as Ichigo and his friends. He figured it would be easier on the girl if there'd be some people he knew would be friendly with her. Going to school would be important for her to learn things about the human world, now that she was a resident.
By the time school rolled around, the Shinigami had recovered enough to walk around. She was nearly completely healed, though she had a huge scar along her chest and stomach that extended to her side. It appeared she had been torn nearly in two. But, as long as she was wearing a shirt, it wasn't visible, though it was still tender.
She came in as a transfer student a few days after school started, to give her a little more recovery time. And Urahara wanted Ichigo and friends to notice her, and she'd have to introduce herself in front of the class.
The ex-Shinigami wasn't looking forward to school, she had already been to the Academy, and it had been hard for her. She had spent all of her time studying to make passing grades, and for some reason or another, she was unable to use kido, so that had made those classes even more unpleasant. She didn't have time for hanging out with people, and had missed the team-building exercises in the kido classes. She assumed this school would be the same, years of studying and homework, with little time for anything else, except perhaps helping in Urahara's shop to keep from being useless to her host.
In the classroom, she had to write her name on the board with chalk, it took her several moments to do so, and a lot of thinking and hesitation. Her penmanship was shaky and rather poor, her style of writing old and archaic.
She turned around and didn't make eye contact with any of her classmates, choosing instead to look at the floor.
Her voice was a little hesitant, and her style of talking was polite and reminiscent of ancient times. "My name is Kasai Akane, I just moved here with my uncle."
The uncle and niece scenario was convenient, so they decided to keep up the charade.
The teacher nodded and told her to go to the only open seat, it was in the back row.
As Akane walked down the row to the desk, she kept her eyes on the floor, still not looking at any of the other students.
The day passed by uneventfully, Akane struggled to keep up with taking notes, as she wasn't used to writing much. They were hastily scrawled, and truth be told, she probably couldn't read them even if she tried.
When it was time for lunch, Akane dug in her back to find the sandwich Urahara had made for her last night. He had told her that he had packed everything up, and that she didn't need to worry about a thing. But, the sandwich was missing, and she didn't have any money to buy something to eat.
In reality, Urahara had never planned to pack the sandwich. In fact, right now, him and Yoruichi were sharing it as a snack. He thought it might be easier for Akane to make friends if she was in a position of need. He had no doubt that Orihime would take pity on her and give her some of her lunch. Though, it was a shame that it would probably be inedible, but that was the price for friendship, and it was one Urahara was willing to pay, as long as he wasn't the one that had to eat Orihime's cooking. He figured that once Orihime took Akane under her slightly insane wing, that the rest of her friends would follow suit, Ichigo and the others, and all the other girls in the class. Orihime was really the key to it all, since everyone liked her, for one reason or another.
She slumped in her seat slightly, what was she to do? She was still getting used to the whole "having to eat every day and sometimes every few hours" thing, and she was getting pretty hungry.
Akane picked up her bag and started rummaging through it again. Maybe she had just missed it the three other times she had already looked through...]
