I met our prime minister's girlfriend (or, if you want, fiancee) yesterday. At least, I met her before, unknowingly, because we're colleagues and both attending the same modules in specialisation right now. But yesterday, as four of us were chatting at lunch, she mentioned her partner as having commented this and that on recent doctor's strike here, I turned to her and asked, politely: "So what does your husband do?"

She stares at me. She says, "well, my husband, I mean, he is J." mentioning his first name, which was about the same as if she said, "well, he's George", meaning G.W.Bush.

I gave her a polite incomprehensive stare. Yes, I have heard her mention his name, but it's just as common a name as George in English!

And then she clarified: "I mean, he's J.J."

*groans* Let us try and gloss over what I felt for the next few minutes. I must be the only IDIOT not having realised that before. Argh.
