I just got off the phone with the dealer (yes they STILL have my car) once again. The heads were warped, they sent them out to be machined. They replaced the head gaskets, the timing belt, the thermostat _and_ the water pump, put the whole thing back together and it's still overheating. He now has absolutely no clue what is wrong with my car and he's had it for 2 1/2 weeks.
Being that I'm now severely frustrated, I called my dealer back in Connecticut because I love them and I trust them. The woman who runs the service department is named Karen and even though I haven't brought my car there in over 2 years she knew exactly who I was when I called and asked me how New York was. She looked up the history on my car and explained to me that this particular model year of the Outback is inclined to have head gasket problems because of a defect in the cooling system. There was a recall on the system which they performed for me in 2003, but she told me it doesn't always work and it's not surprising that this happened. Because of that recall, my warranty was extended to 100,000 miles, but of course right now I have 107,000 miles on my car :( Why the guy at the Subaru dealer in Brooklyn couldn't tell me any of this is beyond me. I realize he may not have my service records at his fingertips, but being that it's a Subaru Dealer you would think by 2005 they would know that a 2000 Outback may be inclined to have this problem. At this point I'm kicking myself for not figuring out some way to get my car up to CT to have it fixed. It's now 2 weeks until I have to drive down to North Carolina with my mom (and now my Aunt Barbara as well) and it looks like I may not actually have a car. Also, this is already costing me around 3 Gs. If they end up having to replace the whole cooling system or something ridiculous like that I shudder to think what it will cost.
