I hate Arthur so much right now.
Proper review when I am capable of unbiased judgement.
Okay, let's get the good stuff out of the way first. I *loved* Gwen/Lancelot (G/L for short because my fingers are cold). It seems the show actually has a plot when Arthur/Gwen (A/G) isn't the focus of the plot! Ohmygosh! Everything, everything about G/L was perfect. I'll let the hardcore, OTP G/L fans gush about it.
Also, Morgana is wicked awesome. And Uther is love.
On to the main focus of complaint. Why does falling in love with Gwen make Arthur have retrograde amnesia? No Gwen's not the person you care most about, remember? You used to care about your duties and your princedom and you used to want nothing more on earth than to please your father. Now obviously you shirk your duties and defy him because Gwen changed your life for the better OMG. Except, you only knew her for a week. Ah, young love.
Seriously, A/G is shown in such a negative light. The most romantic thing Gwen's ever told Arthur this season is that he snores like a pig. Also, Arthur once tried to burn her at the stake, and was instrumental in killing her father. I'm sorry but "All my condolences" does not wipe out the fact that this man ruined your life. Twice. But okay, let's pretend that Gwen's a better person than that and does forgive Arthur. She's still in love with Lance. Why all the staring????? What are you trying to communicate??? I'm sorry I eloped with Lance? Girl, you don't love him. You once said, "Who'd want to marry Arthur?" and not in a jokey way. You told Merlin you liked his kind of guy. Remember??? To go from that to "Lol I love Arthur and thus I shall stare at him 24/7!" within 3 eps is just... just... impossible.
Okay, then let's suspend disbelief and pretend S1 never happened. (Hey, if the writers can do it...) Arthur cares most about Gwen in the world, sure, we can swallow that. But because of his love he treats Merlin like crap (risking someone's life is not funny, as I'm sure Gwen could tell you), lies to his father, and no longer cares for his as-good-as sister Morgana ("is that blood on your fac - WHERE'S GWEN DAMMIT"), or, indeed, for any of his Camelot duties. Even a person suffering from retrograde amnesia loves his family, goshdarnit!
Random moment of stupidity: climbing a sheer 400-foot wall in the night with no gloves on. Merlin I might understand (secret magicz) but Arthur???? While wearing full armour and chain mail? Clearly gravity does not exist in Merlin!
And, last note: WHERE BE MY MERLIN/GWEN. My bffs, where have you gone???
Like I said before, Arthur/Gwen deserve better. They deserve a nice, slow, romantic relationship, not an episode about the woes of cohabitation and battery-farmed chickens. This show maxes me tear my hair out x_x
