There's a new version of Emma airing on the BBC, with Romola Garai cast as the title character. I watched the first episode and loved it. The music, the directing, the acting were all top-notch, and every shot was flawless. I applaud the hair, makeup and wardrobe departments. This series has the quality of a movie. I'm sad to say that I've never read Emma, but from watching this I really want to now!
Romola's performance is excellent: she nails every emotion. Her snobbish reaction to Mr Martin is priceless as is her subtle wheedling of Harriet. Harriet herself is superb, Louise Dylan plays a really convincing naive and simple girl (the marriage proposal scene is especially top-notch). Emma and Mr Knightley's (Jonny Lee Miller) rapport is excellent, I kind of shipped them from the beginning, while Mr Elton (Blake Ritson) is just the right balance of charm, looks and social climber. Only bad point is Harriet's hairstyle, which I despise (I only put up with it because it's historically accurate). Thank gods they kept Romola's a simple updo.
Here's a picspam to showcase the gorgeous cinematography: all the caps needed were a tiny bit of colouring and some brightening up; my favourite scene in the episode is the one where Emma is backlit by her window (so atmospheric!), but the last scene where Emma watches Mr Knightley wistfully and the scene with Harriet's painting (the one I capped - "He really must love you!") are pretty awesome too.
I can't wait for the next episode... maybe I'll get the novel to read in between now and then, to add to my giant list of to-read books (like Emma's own, haha). And yes I am addicted to picspams, why do you ask? >_> But this TV show was just too gorgeous to resist...
