Is it OK that I rent a Godard film and a DVD of the OC and it is the OC that helps me make up my mind? Is it OK that as a (faux) pomo snob I even bother with the twinge of "low-brow" guilt? Meh. At least if Toronto is a mistake I can denounce TV and not the French New Wave.
I'll miss a lot about Vancouver. But everything that I'll miss I love because it sticks out in Vancouver like a sore thumb, rubbed raw by all the outsiders practicing vicarious frottage against it. I think that's actually how thumbs become sore. Somebody notices that it looks a little misshapen and then suddenly you have a hundred lunatics humping it. Sometimes it gets destroyed and sometimes the sexual energy and just plain need of the outsiders allows the thumb to start glowing with a palpable energy, attracting even more of the hungry and woebegone.
