Had so much fun today at the (world!) premiere of Joss Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" at TIFF.
jenab,
purplediamond, my friend Ali and I got in line 2 hours before the movie, which was a good thing since it was already quite long at that point! We were too far back to see the red carpet, but while we waited around to be let in we were surprised at one point when
purplediamond was looking back up the street and suddenly squealed (yes, *squealed* LOL!): "It's Nathan Fillion!" Of course our heads whipped around to look in the same direction and who was walking up the street toward the theatre but himself (and his handler for the day)! We (and a few others) cheered and clapped for him and he was cute and clapped as he went past us. And, of course, I stupidly didn't have my camera out, so I didn't get a pic at all. *facepalm* Found out later by checking twitter that he had been stuck in traffic (it was quite crazy), so he probably decided to just get out and walk rather than be late.
We got to see everyone as we came into the theatre since they were being interviewed, but even though this time I had my camera out, we were all being shuffled through quickly to get seated, so no pics. We managed to get some decent seats together near the middle back on the main level, so I was able to capture some video of Joss speaking before the movie. He was so cute and humble and I just wanted to hug the heck outta him. :-D
Movie was full of awesome, but it was pretty much a done deal that I'd like it before I even saw it because (in no particular order) a) Shakespeare, b) Joss, and c) awesome cast. Standouts for me:
* Wow Joss has a gorgeous place! :-D
* Alexis Denisof (Benedick) and Amy Acker (Beatrice) were SO funny, and it made my shippy little heart happy to see them together since I had so wanted Wesley and Fred together on "Angel." :-D
* Clark Gregg (Leonato) had so many fun, goofy moments I just wanted to give him a big ol' hug. :-D
* And yes, Nathan (Dogberry) was fabulously dorky at playing the fool, as expected. :-D
After the movie was done and the audience gave them all a well-deserved standing ovation, it was time for Q&A (which I recorded and hopefully it turned out ok..if it's any good I will attempt to upload). Joss truly appeared to be touched by the audience's reaction. He got the whole cast and a couple of the production crew that were there to come up on the stage with him. The MC had been smart and stated that the questions had to be limited to the movie itself, and we got a couple of good ones all directed at Joss (choice of B&W, was everyone really drinking wine the whole time LOL!). The MC at one point (probably seeing that all the Qs were going to Joss) asked that each person onstage had to tell either what was the worst or the best thing about doing the movie, and everyone had something fun or something touching to say. Funniest was Sean Maher (Don John) describing a conversation between him & Joss after shooting a scene, with Joss proclaiming that Sean was being "such a dick" and that he should "play more dicks" because he was good at it. LOL! It was so definitely a love fest, but it was truly genuine, and I feel that speaks a lot to the kind of people Joss likes to have around him. Makes me like him all the more. :-D
We didn't get out of the theatre right away after everything was done, so we missed Nathan leaving out the stage door, but we saw pretty much everyone else. Many of them were gracious and took some time to sign autos/take pics. Got some video, but don't know how good it turned out.
All in all I'm very glad I got to come see this and that this was my first TIFF experience. So very positive and I definitely am considering coming next year.
