shelter_diner As birthdays went, it wasn't much different than many others. A warm day spent at the beach with family, good friends, good food and the people he loved most. However, this one was special. This one would be the first birthday since he and Shaun had gotten together. Zach smiled and opened the back of his Jimmy, hefted a cooler and began the walk down the path to the beach.
Half way down, Gabe took the cooler from him. “Beer? I'll carry that,” Gabe informed him.
Zach smiled and surrendered the cooler. Little did Gabe know, the cooler with the beer was already at the beach with Shaun and Cody.
“So, what did my brother get you?” Gabe asked, leaning in conspiratorially.
Zach shook his head. “Nothing.”
“Nothing? You're kidding, right? He has to have gotten you something,” Gabe insisted as the path they were on opened onto the beach.
Zach shook his head. “Nope, nothing.”
Then, he stopped so suddenly, Gabe bumped into him. “What the hell man?”
“Look,” Zach said as he pointed with his chin.
A few feet away Cody and Shaun were deep in concentration as they worked on an enormous sand castle. Cody knelt as he carefully packed damp sand into a plastic mold. Shaun knelt next to him and leaned in, carefully supervising Cody. Mold filled, Shaun carefully helped Cody turn it over to set it into the sand, then tapping it loose and wiggling the mold off. What remained was a perfect turret. Just then, Shaun looked up, a huge smile lighting up his face as he waved at Zach and Gabe.
“I really did get lucky with your brother,” he told Gabe.
“Dude, TMI. Seriously,” Gabe said as he backed up.
Zach laughed. “Not what I meant and you know it. Seriously.”
Gabe dropped the cooler into the sand and Zach sat on it as he continued to watch Shaun and Cody's castle grow.
“He really didn't get you anything?” Gabe asked again.
“Later. He promised me I would get it later - after the BBQ and after everyone's gone home and after Cody's gone to sleep.”
“What do you think it is?”
Zach shook his head. “With your brother? Who knows?”
Shaun stood and sat next to Zach on the cooler. “My little brother is too nosy for his own good. He'll know soon enough what your birthday present is. Patience was never his strong point, though,” he teased.
Moments later, Cody came bounding up. “Zach, Zach! Did you see my castle?” he asked excitedly. His hair was tousled by the wind, his eyes glistening brightly with excitement and his cheeks were just a touch pink. Zach made a mental note to put some more sun block on him.
“I did, buddy. It looks great!”
Cody looked around the crowded beach a moment, a frown creasing his face. “Where's Jeannie?” he asked. “Family should be together for a birthday.”
Zach inhaled deeply. “She's not here, buddy. It's just you, me, and Shaun.” He paused to look at Shaun. “That's all the family I need.”
