The sun set across the lake, casting the sky into brilliant colors. JC sipped his coffee, inhaled its scent, and then sipped some more as he curled his fingers around the mug. Nearly everyone else was asleep and the house was quiet making this a time he cherished more and more as the days grew more crazy.

He leaned back against the chaise, relaxing in the fading light, and closed his eyes. Only for a moment, he told himself. Just a moment. When he woke again, it was to Chris placing a gentle kiss on the top of his head and tucking him in with a green quilt with small daises printed on it.

“Hey,” JC said quietly.

“Hey yourself. You’re going to get cold out here,” Chris answered. He sniffed JC’s coffee. “Dude, is that vanilla?”

JC sipped his coffee and wrinkled his nose. Well, he’d been asleep long enough for it to go cold. He set it on the patio bricks and pulled the quilt up under his chin. “Cold vanilla now, but yes. Are the girls asleep?” he asked.

Chris chuckled. “Cindy was pouting because you were out here and if Daddy could, why couldn’t she? But I think she changed her mind when I explained that you would be the one chewed alive by bugs tonight and she wouldn’t be as she slept in her bed instead.”

JC lifted the quilt and shifted as Chris climbed in with him. “Yeah well, if I do, so do you,” he whispered.

Chris snuggled in. “But what a way to go.”
