It is interesting to live in what is essentially an "emerging" neighborhood. There is so much construction around here. Condos, condos, and more condos. I've already complained about the construction across the canal. Well, there is a lot more. I found out that one set of horrible projects nearby, is going down. I'm happy to hear that as I walk by everyday and although I've never had any problems, it has long had a terrible reputation. Apparently 10-15 years ago grown men were afraid to walk by it,any time of the day. There was a stabbing there only a few days ago around 7:00 pm in broad daylight, and I witnessed a bad car robbery in the middle of the afternoon nearby. Knives are almost as dangerous as guns in my book. There are some horrible, bloody, disturbing crimes that are commited in this city with those weapons.
I have been behaving as though I lived in a safer neighborhood than I actually do. I guess that's the joy of ignorance. I have taken streets nearby this high crime section at night, by myself. I've never felt scared, or even nervous here but maybe I should? I'm going to have to change my behavior. I feel like this neighborhood is in some ways like the Cabrini Green area in Chicago, as all these nice flat blocks are being built around public housing. It doesn't look very bad so I guess that's why I've had a false sense of security.
I'm not going to be paranoid, just more cautious. I think its interesting how many lectures I have gotten on how Americans carry guns and how scary crime is in America. I feel less comfortable here than in Chicago, that's for sure. Then again it may be due to my neighborhood. If I went a few blocks east from my old place I would end up in Uptown which was questionable.

An article on knife culture. Packington Estate is that council housing I pass when I go to my surgery, our favorite world cup pub and the best charity shop I've found in London.
