Summary: Cassie thinks about Kori.
Every step I take is stolen, Cassie thought as she sat down in the water. I stole Kori's place in the coven. I stole Adam from Diana. Slowly, she reclined back into the rippling water like a self-baptism, trying not to flinch once she was completely submerged. Everything I have, everything I love, everything that defines me, I stole.
The weak moonlight undulated above her, spreading like spilt milk; air bubbles spiralled up from her nose, popping against the surface. Cassie imagined each one was a person she loved, slowly drifting away. Her father had manipulated the witches of New Salem to his own ends, and she was turning out no better. I shouldn't be here. I should still be in California, the shy little unicorn…
A double pressure jabbed into the softness of her belly, making her rear up gasping. "Raj!" The sound was as harsh as gunshots as Cassie struggled to sit up. Someone was running up to her, and there was a solid, comforting presence by her side. "Cassie, what are you doing out here?"
Cassie looked at Adam blearily. Gobbling up air, she lurched to her feet, using Raj for support. "Nothing. Just swimming." She slid her hand in Adam's and cast one longing glance back at the water, which had swept all evidence of her self-baptism away. It's always ourselves, Cassie thought, we lose in the sea.
