star light, star bright.

I just wish our public mediums were more focused on informing than entertaining. The older I get, the more it bugs me.

And that's fine. That's all well and good. It's because I grew up in a culture that catered to keeping kids entertained and distracted. So it's only reasonable that now I feel this inner desire for television and the internet to be more information oriented. Or at least, more intelligent in their structure, and less "bam! Wow!"

And it's not like the access to information isn't there. It is available. And I do think there is a deep recognition in my generation and others to WANT to be informed. Problem is, we're too easily distracted. As I said, my childhood -just as others before and since then- have been built around distracting us. Saturday morning cartoons, blockbuster movies, and now things like twitter and facebook. For every inkling of desire for knowledge, there are several reality shows or big budget movies and hip new songs about relationships and nonsense that distract us.

I don't feel like placing the blame, really. I suppose our parents are at fault. But now that we're growing up, it's our responsibility to pay attention and give a damn.

The environment is fucked, global politics are now 110% corrupted, and our social interactions are shallow. We'd sooner spend our money on a new shirt than support a cause. Then again, your charity may sooner end up in a slush fund to make the rich richer than actually help who those less fortunate.

Maybe it is best to keep ourselves distracted with these notions of staying younger longer, having fun, and only caring about celebrities. Maybe.

But then, I still can't help this desire to know. And I still can't help wishing apathy wasn't the core value of our society.
