Jonghyun scanned the glass containers, intently looking at each option he had.
There were just so many.
There were sophisticated and expensive choices and casual and cheap choices. He tapped on his pocket with the wallet inside, biting his lip as he deliberated.
Nothing cheap for him. Ever.
He continually walked parallel to the long case, trying to find the match that was perfect for Key.
“Are you even close to deciding?”
Jonghyun snapped his gaze from the objects, looking at his friend, dumfounded, “Are you seriously asking me that, Hyung?”
Onew shrugged, his hands in his pockets as he observed what Jonghyun was looking at, “I know I have no fashion sense, but they’re all the same color and just have a different design. What’s the difference exactly?”
Jonghyun fought the need to roll his eyes, instead looking for an assistant rather than to argue with Onew, “Excuse me?”
The woman turned around, a bright smile on her face as she got a good look at him, “How may I help you?”
“Sapphires. I’m looking for sapphires,” Jonghyun proudly answered.
The woman didn’t hesitate to guide him over to the specific section decorated with blue jewels.
He looked at each item closely, hoping the first thing to catch his eye would remind him of Key.
Unfortunately, the first thing wasn’t as pretty as he expected it to be, and neither was it attractive at all.
He kept off his impatience as he walked down the section, trying to find the best thing he thought Key would look amazing with.
Not that he wasn’t amazing looking already.
But nothing there screamed ‘Key’ out to him. They didn’t seem to compliment Key’s style and Jonghyun was ready to slap himself on the forehead as he realized a fancy store probably would’ve never suited Key’s flamboyance.
He scratched his head, crease lines on his forehead as he sighed in disappointment.
“Hey, Jonghyun?” Onew tried getting his attention.
He looked over, seeing Onew pointing to a specific item inside the counter. Jonghyun’s mouth hung open, surprised Onew of all people found it.
That was it. That was Key.
They were simple, tiny hoops-hoops that a man would be able to wear without mockery, Jonghyun noted-in silver. There were stones on the inside of it-they were all sapphires, but not all were blue.
It was a simple version of a rainbow. They were pretty and they totally matched Key’s personality.
Jonghyun smiled, his heart pumping in excitement as he eyed the pair of earrings.
“Ma’am? I’ll take these, please!”
“Jonghyun! Jonghyun! Look!” Key squealed, “Your audition letter! The audition letter is finally here!”
Jonghyun hurried to Key’s side on the couch, sitting beside him and pulling him closely as Key opened the envelope, greedily taking out the paper inside and hiding it from Jonghyun’s eyes as he read it by himself.
“Key!” Jonghyun whined, “Gimmie it!”
Key’s happy and red face scanned the letter. When he came across the third sentence of the letter, he pursed his lips, along with his eyes drooping, slowly looking up at Jonghyun.
No, this couldn’t be. Jonghyun couldn’t have been rejected.
“Key?” Jonghyun asked, holding him closer, “Key, what’s it say?”
Key bit his lip, regretting about calling Jonghyun in. He should’ve read it first and kept the letter a secret, keeping Jonghyun to think he’d never get a letter.
Jonghyun was so talented-Key couldn’t stand knowing that he wasn’t ‘good enough’ to be in an entertainment business. Didn’t he sound fantastic? Didn’t he look like he had dedication?
Key put the letter face-down beside him and turned to sit on his lap, clutching him closely and placing kisses on his neck in silent apologies.
He was holding on too tight, shaking from the energy in his fists.
“Key?”
He murmured on his neck the answer, trying to be as quiet as possible.
It was quiet for a long while.
Jonghyun’s hands surrounded Key completely and kissed his cheek with a disappointed sigh, “I got a rejection letter, didn’t I?”
“I didn’t mean to excite you,” Key sighed, sounding more disappointed than Jonghyun.
He could feel Jonghyun’s forgiving smile as he brushed a hand through his hair.
“Don’t worry about it.”
Jonghyun was spending more and more time with the friends he had left than he had with Key.
Key would be lying when he’d say he wasn’t jealous that they got more attention but he couldn’t bring himself to tell Jonghyun. There were other people in society than him and of course Jonghyun has the right to have a broad social life.
He watched from a corner as Jonghyun talked with a few people who seemed comfortable to be around him. His eyes lit up and his smile was large-Key could tell he was really into their conversation.
A male with honey hair-Onew, Key remembered-smiled brightly and slung an arm over Jonghyun’s shoulders, squeezing him close as a musical laugh fell from his lips.
Jonghyun looked up at Onew and smiled so wide, Key could barely see his eyes.
Something unsettling jumbled in the pit of his stomach.
He didn’t like the way Onew had held him too close, rubbing his arm at some points as he spoke to the others. It only made him feel a little better as Jonghyun kept itching away from his grip-but teasingly.
No, he’s not a cheater. Maybe Onew just likes him.
That thought still posed the same threat to Key.
Key fumbled with his backpack and nonchalantly walked out of the corner and across to his locker after Jonghyun’s eyes flittered to where he was standing.
Of course he didn’t want to look like a snooping boyfriend, so he may as well show himself but not for Jonghyun, but his damn locker.
There were sudden goodbyes and complaints as he opened his locker, but he thought none of it.
Just put your books in, take your brush, take your mirror, and now you’re ready to go home-
Arms surrounded his figure, a familiar forehead pressing to the back of his neck and placing fluffy kisses in the spot.
Key’s heart sped up a bit as he resumed what he was doing wasn’t affected by the presence.
“Let’s go home together,” Jonghyun chuckled, taking Key’s hands out of the locker, forcing him to shut it, “Come on.”
It was an awkward walk as Jonghyun stayed in his spot behind Key, both of them waddling over to the car-Key was a tad bit embarrassed by the childishness.
Jonghyun, as always, opened the passenger door for Key, and Key just sat inside, putting on the seatbelt and waiting to leave.
Jonghyun sat in the driver seat and adjusted the seat upward, putting his hands on the wheel without even starting the car.
He didn’t even bother turning on the car or even made a move, and Key was confused, “What are you doing?”
“I saw you around the corner,” Jonghyun chuckled, licking his lips, “You were watching me.”
“N-No!” Key protested, stomping on the floor, “Was not! I went to my locker!”
Jonghyun flashed his smile at Key and he just stopped protesting, huffing as he fixed a piece of his hair back into place.
“Whatever you say, Key.”
Key was hanging out with his friends more often and Jonghyun felt really lonely.
Sometimes when Jonghyun would walk into his little group of friends, he’d try holding Key’s hands for any comforting response. But all he got was a gentle squeeze and Key resumed his conversation as if Jonghyun hadn’t even come to school that day.
He didn’t understand. There was more space between them as time grew. He only hung out with his friends more because Key was, and he figured he should since he didn’t want to bother his boyfriend in any way.
He sighed, adjusting his book bag and shook his head, making his way down the hallway that Key was usually at by the end of the day so he could take him home.
He entered the hallway in a short amount of time, and to only find Key wasn’t even there.
Jonghyun furrowed his brows, checking the open doors to classrooms and even the bathrooms, but Key wasn’t anywhere.
He stared at the clock-he’d checked for a half hour now and Key was still no where.
He started panicking, thinking his ex-friends cornered Key again and now he was hurting. He felt the urge to run.
And yet he felt the urge to stay put.
He felt not threat or danger-he felt like he wasn’t needed.
What was this feeling? He never had it before.
His phone buzzed in his pocket and Jonghyun quickly checked it, sighing in relief and disappointment.

I forgot to tell you I’m going on the bus with Taeminnie. Sorry, I just realized what time it was. Go home, yeobo and sleep. I know you had a tough day. C:

Jonghyun slowly put his phone in his pocket, taking his time to reach the entrance of the school and leave Key-less.
It was the first time that ever happened.
Graduation was quickly approaching and Jonghyun and Key were seeing less and less of each other.
They were busy to the max, getting ready to finally leave grade school and into college. That took a whole chunk of ‘them time’ away, but neither of them complained. Graduation comes first and mending a relationship comes second.
They were getting fitted for their gowns, and of course Jonghyun was in front of Key in line.
“Jjongie?” Key raised his eyebrows, taking a hand to turn him around.
Jonghyun’s head whipped to Key’s voice, instantly smiling in relief as he finally saw the younger, “Key, it’s been forever!” he breathed, pecking him on the cheek.
Key’s cheeks turned bright pink with a tiny smile, punching him on the shoulder, “Don’t be so lovey-dovey, right now. We’ve got fitting to do.”
Jonghyun nodded, kissing his cheek for a few seconds more than the last before chuckling and turning back around.
From behind, Key hesitantly took Jonghyun’s free hands, playing with them and becoming familiar with them again.
What’s happening to us?
It was time to officially say goodbye to the school.
It was after the ceremony; Jonghyun was with his mother and sister (who slipped out of their father’s house to go), getting a good last look at the school before ready to get in the car.
Key was doing the same with his parents, the tears abundant down his face, his mother wiping them away with a watery smile and her comments of how proud she was.
They were both heading to the cars, which were coincidentally parked next to each other.
They looked at each other, Jonghyun immediately rushing over to his . . . boyfriend, holding him close and wiping the tears that still fell, “Baby, don’t cry.”
“It’s really over, here,” Key whispered, holding his hands, “We’re through with this part of life.”
Jonghyun chuckled, running a hand through the brown locks with a bitter smile, “But now we go through a new part of life and live on.”
“Yeah. . .” Key breathed, “Yeah . . .”
“Hey,” Jonghyun caught his attention, “I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning. We’re going to celebrate all day, just you and me.”
Key’s throat went dry and nodded, slipping away from Jonghyun’s hands and turning to the car with a small ‘goodnight’.
Jonghyun felt as if there was a part missing of Key.
High school Key.
And he wasn’t getting him back.
They spent the summer together as much as they could in between their jobs. Sometimes it was as simple as just lying in bed together or as sophisticated as a dinner out.
It was never consistent, but it wasn’t always full of surprises.
One day they were holding hands, and both of them didn’t feel as happy as before.
Something was coming in between their relationship and neither of them knew the reason for such separation.
But the answer was easy when they didn’t think too hard about it.
“Key?” Jonghyun asked, voice small.
“Hm?” he hummed, switching the TV channels.
Jonghyun gulped, running his hand over Key’s, “Do you think . . .?”
Key raised his brows and shut off the television, looking at Jonghyun with a serious expression, “Think?”
“Do you think . . . we’re falling apart?”
It was dead silent as they stared at each other, neither knowing what to say.
Key thought about it. Nowadays, they weren’t as cheerful or as energetic as before. They barely did anything exciting-not even the cuddles were.
But Key still had that fuzzy feeling inside that if he and Jonghyun were to break up, he wouldn’t be able to live on. It was his reason for staying-for clinging on to him with sad eyes.
“Maybe,” he sighed, playing with Jonghyun’s fingers, “But we’ll make it work. We’ll find that spark again.”
Shock spread over Jonghyun’s face. They’ll make it work? We’ll find that spark?
Where did it even go?
It was true Jonghyun’s urges to be with Key toned down a bit, but he never wanted to let go of his hands, the though of his face, the feel of his skin . . .
He just couldn’t figure out as to why they were feeling this way.
All they could do was hope they could really rebuild what they had.
“I’ll call you,” Jonghyun stated.
“I’ll call you, too,” Key nodded.
“Web chat?” he blinked.
“When I can,” he nodded again.
They were both separating ways. The colleges they managed to make it in were far in the opposite directions, and neither Key nor Jonghyun were able to see each other personally.
They were scared to do this-to be so far away for so long. They even decided to stay in their college’s area during the summer so they could work off what they needed to pay instead of asking their parents.
It was going to be hard . . . but they were going to manage.
Somehow.
“I love you,” Jonghyun confessed, holding Key’s face in his hands with worried eyes.
“I love you, too,” the younger smiled, angling downward to connect their lips together.
It was small, but they managed to get that small spark back when they kissed.
They tangled their fingers in each others’ hair, panting into their mouths as if air hadn’t even existed on the planet. As if they weren’t in an airport.
They grew closer and closer to each other . . . only to back away with flushed faces and sheepish smiles.
“I’ll see you soon,” Key nodded.
“Yeah, I’ll see you soon,” Jonghyun agreed, squeezing their hands.
Then they parted to different areas of their gates.
One year had passed, and the two were on pretty good terms.
“Jjongie!” Key would complain over the phone.
“Fine, fine!” Jonghyun caved, going through his phone and pressing send, “There. You now have a picture of my bare upper body sent to your phone.”
Key smiled a little into the phone.
Two years had passed, and the pet names ‘yeobo’ had dropped.
“Jonghyun,” Key sighed, his eyes shutting and pulling a hand to his forehead, “I’m tired. I’ll talk to you later."
“Right,” Jonghyun agreed, “Sometime next week; I don’t have the time. Sorry.”
Key’s heart clenched as he hung up.
Three years had passed, and they talked less and less.

Good luck on that test today.

Thanks. Do well on your exams, too.

Not even one emoticon passed between one another.
They were afraid to.
They were afraid to show happiness to each other.
Four years had passed . . . And they cut off communication; officially saying they couldn’t be together anymore.
Key stared at his phone, the warning on his screen.
Warning. Deleting contact Jonghyun. Are you sure?
Key’s eyes filled with tears, spilling as he pressed the okay option.
I miss you already.
Jonghyun went through his contact list to find Onew (he went to his college) to see if he was free for a study session.
He came across a familiar and haunting name, pausing and staring for a moment.
Subconsciously, his finger pressed over options, pressing on the delete button.
Do you want to delete contact Key?
Jonghyun was breathing heavier than usual, tensing as he pressed the yes button.
I love you.
It was eight years since graduation.
Key had returned to hometown a couple years ago, figuring that since he was done college, he may as well come back and make his living there. There were a lot of foreigners making their way to his hometown; so his years of being taught to translate from many languages to Korean could pay off.
It was a chilly day in November and Key had his beige overcoat on with his hands in the pockets, tan pants, and a pair of heavy black boots.
He was walking down a sidewalk like any other day, making his way to work early so he managed to never be late.
He shivered a bit, crossing a crosswalk and burying his neck as close to his coat as he could, quickening his pace to get to work as soon as he could.
He bumped shoulders with someone and he quietly sighed, turning to bow at the already bowing man-shorter than he was with crazy hair; the back being brown, progressing to blond in the front.
“I’m sorry,” Key’s aged and husky voice apologized, bowing a few more times before standing straight, “I was in a hurry-”
The man lifted as well and both pairs of eyes met.
“K-Key?” Jonghyun asked in surprise.
“J-Jonghyun?” Key asked at the same time.
They stood there in stiffness, staring at each other in disbelief.
Key couldn’t believe it. He was standing in front of Jonghyun after eight years and his heart leaped out of his chest. It was painful, but he felt like it was something he wanted to live with.
He looked the same, yet his face did show signs of aging. Nonetheless, he was as stunning as he was in high school.
Something Key could barely remember rushed through his veins. Seconds going by, he realized it was the feeling he had for Jonghyun when they were together in high school.
The feelings of the wanting love.
Key shifted, kicking his feet on the concrete, “When did you come back?”
“A couple years back,” Jonghyun stuttered, his voice breaking at some points.
“Oh . . .”
“How’ve you been?” they both asked the awkward question at the same time.
“Oh, well . . .” Key trailed off, looking down his original path of travel, “Everything’s going well. I’m living fine. You?”
“Very much t-the same,” Jonghyun nodded, looking around.
They stood there, forgetting that there were people bustling around them.
“You look fantastic,” Key remarked, pointedly looking at his hair, “No one would notice you’re twenty-seven.”
“And you look exactly the same; all your beauty products, I presume?” Jonghyun chuckled comfortably, “You look even younger.”
Key felt his face heat up, trying to cover it up with his coat, “So, what do you do?
Jonghyun kicked a pebble at his foot with an amused smile, “I’m actually a photographer. Turned out music was just some hobby. What about you?”
Key was ultimately shocked to hear music was in second place. Jonghyun loved his guitar, what could’ve convinced him for it to be a hobby?
“I’m a translator for any language to Korean . . .”
“That’s a pretty exciting job, you have,” Jonghyun smiled, “Meeting new people every day.”
Key shrugged, “I get around.”
They stood there, staring once more.
Key was startled by Jonghyun’s next question from the blue. “You still wear them?”
Jonghyun’s eyes were on his ears, and Key gasped, holding his hands over them to shield the earrings away, “They’re . . . too pretty and hold too many memories for me to throw them away. Do you want them ba-”
“No!” Jonghyun cut him off, “I mean, no, I don’t. Keep them. I hope you still like them . . .”
Key nodded slowly, inching his hands back to his pockets from the multi-colored sapphires.
“So . . . are you married? Love life at all?” Key asked accidentally-not wanting to hear an answer.
Jonghyun took a small step back on his heel, his eyes looking around nervously, “Uh, yeah, I do-not married, though. R-Remember . . . Onew?”
Key’s heart broke and shredded into thousands of thin pieces. Even though their time together was up and no possible way of getting back together, it still hurt to know that he really did lose Jonghyun because of a rough patch in the relationship.
“I knew the guy liked you,” Key falsely chuckled with a forced smile.
Jonghyun nodded stiffly, eyes widening, “And you?”
“O-Oh,” Key stared at the sidewalk, “Uh-Yeah, yeah, I actually have a partner.”
“Who’s the lucky guy?”
I wish it was you.
“One of Taemin’s friends from high school; his name is Minho,” Key lied, only wanting to sound as if he moved on like Jonghyun did.
Jonghyun didn’t seem too content with his answer, but Key thought that maybe he was just uncomfortable.
“Well, he’s truly a lucky guy, I’ll tell you that.”
“Yeah . . .”
Jonghyun then muttered something under his breath, Key asking him to speak up, but Jonghyun said he said nothing.
“I guess . . .” Jonghyun shrugged, “It was nice to catch up with you, Key.”
Key blinked in confusion, nodding, “Same here, Jonghyun. See you around, maybe.”
The nodded to each other with the final goodbyes, heading off into different directions.
Key looked back behind him, watching as Jonghyun’s figure was getting smaller and smaller, soon enough blurry from the water in his eyes.
He let them fall, sniffing and pulling out a tissue from his pocket to blow his nose.
“I’m sorry I lied,” Key said to himself as if he were still talking to Jonghyun , “You know who you are to me. You’re someone-my baby-my someone I can’t forget. I never wanted to and yet I let it slip . . . You know who you are in my world; my life. Even though I can’t have you anymore because of stupid a mistake, that doesn’t change anything about how I feel about you and only you.
“You’re my only one.”
Jonghyun grunted as he slowly walked down the sidewalk, cursing himself for being stupid.
He got speeding tickets on his car and his license had been suspended for another few weeks. He had to walk because the buses were stuffy in the cold weather and he knew he’d suffocate.
He clutched his hands inside the stomach pocket of his hoodie, hoping to relieve some cold-but it didn’t work.
His distraction from the cold had him bump into someone-realizing it a little late. He immediately bowed to the person he bumped into, apologizing sincerely.
“I’m sorry,” the manly voice apologized-why was it so familiar?-, “I was in a hurry-”
He looked up from his bow, freezing on spot.
Key.
He was looking at Key.
He bumped into Key of all people.
There was so much . . . relief.
“K-Key?”
“J-Jonghyun?
He was really facing the Key. Eight years apart . . . that really did something more than a simple week.
He could feel so many emotions building up in his body, sadness coming forth as dominant.
Over the years, he’d realized he hadn’t shaken Key from him; he only wanted to avoid him because he was afraid Key had already let go.
But he was here. He was so young-he didn’t age a bit. In fact, he looked like he went in reverse.
Jonghyun . . . could feel so much want within himself.
“When did you come back?” Key asked, his foot kicking at the ground.
“A couple years back,” his voice broke-betraying him.
Key nodded in approval, “Oh . . .”
“How’ve you been?” they both asked the at the same time.
“Oh, well . . .” Key trailed off, looking away, “Everything’s going well. I’m living fine. You?”
“Very much t-the same,” Jonghyun nodded, looking around.
They stood there, ignoring the people around them.
“You look fantastic,” Key remarked, looking at his hair, “No one would notice you’re twenty-seven.”
Jonghyun chuckled loudly, “And you look exactly the same; all your beauty products, I presume? You look even younger.”
He could see the embarrassment take over Key’s face, and Jonghyun regretted his choice of words, “ So, what do you do?”
Jonghyun smiled with enthusiasm, liking this question, “I’m actually a photographer. Turned out music was just some hobby. What about you?”
That was a lie. He only stopped music because of Key.
“I’m a translator for any language to Korean . . .” he trailed off.
“That’s a pretty exciting job, you have,” Jonghyun smiled, “Meeting new people every day.”
Key's coat moved with his shoulders, “I get around.”
They stood there in silence. That is, until Jonghyun noticed something, his emotions piling up, “You still wear them?”
Key’s hands instantly flew to his ears, feeling over the earrings Jonghyun had given him as an anniversary present, “They’re . . . too pretty and hold too many memories for me to throw them away. Do you want them ba-”
“No!” Jonghyun cut him off, hoping Key would wear them forever, “I mean, no, I don’t. Keep them. I hope you still like them . . .”
They were buried in silence again.
“So . . .” Key was the first to break it, “Are you married? Love life at all?”
Jonghyun took a small step back on his heel, his eyes looking around nervously, “Uh, yeah, I do-not married, though. R-Remember . . . Onew?”
He lied.
Damn it, he lied.
He shouldn’t have done that. Maybe Key was still single. Maybe they could’ve tried getting back together. They could do irrational things again to reconnect.
Damn it, why did you lie?!
“I knew the guy liked you,” Key chuckled with a smile
Jonghyun nodded stiffly, biting his lips as he regretted asking, “And you?”
“O-Oh,” Key stared at the sidewalk, “Uh-Yeah, yeah, I actually have a partner.”
Jonghyun’s heart shut down, now feeling a little safer about his lie.
But it didn’t stop the ache. Key really did move on. Key really wanted them to be over.
He didn’t mean to delete his contact on his phone! He thought it was . . . best at the time!
Everything is regretful.
“Who’s the lucky guy?” he dared to ask.
I hoped it was still me.
“One of Taemin’s friends from high school,” Key had proudly told him, “His name is Minho.”
Jonghyun’s shoulder slumped, quite dissatisfied with life, “Well, he’s truly a lucky guy, I’ll tell you that.”
So lucky.
“Yeah . . .”
Jonghyun then muttered, “It should be me. Not some Minho kid. I love you,” hoping Key didn’t hear. Key did ask, but Jonghyun shrugged it off.
“I guess . . .” Jonghyun shrugged, trying to be cool when he was just suffering, “It was nice to catch up with you, Key.”
Key blinked in what could’ve been confusion, “Same here, Jonghyun. See you around, maybe.”
Jonghyun agreed, bowing to him before walking off-seemingly the opposite direction of Key.
He glanced behind him, watching his first and only true love walk off without and hesitation or want to just shout out at him that he loved him.
The pressure built up in his chest and turned back, unable to fight the tears that were forced to spill over.
This wasn’t right. This wasn’t fair.
He crossed his arms, wiping his red nose with his head down, “I didn’t let you go. Not one bit, Key. I made the worst decision ever by trying to tune you out. I have no idea if you went through a rough time or what and maybe it’s my fault. Don’t ever forgive me. I swear, Key, I never stopped loving you. We hit speed bump and didn’t cross over it properly. We should’ve just done it again,” he crossed a crosswalk.”
“I want to hold you again; to touch you again. I want to claim you as mine again, but now you’ve moved on and I can’t be like that for you anymore.
“I will let you go-only a little bit. No way could I live without any of you in my brain, the memory of one night specifically . . .
“That night I had you say something that I needed to hear. For you to say that was my everything. It made every last moment with you precious that I can’t ever forget. I’ve said it every day, Key, and I’ll keep saying it.
“You’re the only one.”
---Note~---
Okay, hi~
This took me a week to do, and I know I promised to put it up Thursday, but I had work to do. I was going to upload it yesterday, but I got finished at midnight and tried editing, and I ended up getting a little sick. :|
So, freshly edited this morning. C:
How was it? If any of you hear Only One, you know it’s not too happy of a song. I hate writing break ups, but I always like a tug at emotion.
These were the earrings, but I imagined them a lot smaller. Sapphires are for the month of September, so I hope you all know what that means.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KIM KIBUM IN KOREA~
YOU’RE NOT MY BIAS, BUT YOU’RE SO FLAWLESS~
I realized that I was posting this on his birthday and got a little upset that it isn’t happy…
Oops?
Ah, so this is the last update for a long while. I’m planning on getting this fic done and I have no clue on how or when to finish it. I’ll let you know. C:
Thank you to any views/comments as usual. It makes my night, my day, my complete everything. C:
BYE!
