So the summer is almost over, because school starts Monday! (Apparently St. Michael's is similar to Colby in its complete non-observance of holidays . . .) I am so very excited! I am glad the summer is almost done, as my whole schedule is changing soon. Before long there will be far less Rite Aid of doom and far more work of awesome! I had my first taste of it yesterday. It was my only day off from Rite Aid this week, but I found a half-day substituting job in a school in Burlington! It ended up being for kindergarten which is an age group I have pretty much no experience with, but an age group they apparently usually have multiple adults with, at least in the beginning so I wasn't the only sub. That took a lot of pressure off since I was mainly just helping out the older more experienced sub. It gave me a lot more confidence though and I can't wait to sub on my own now. Also, I've always sort of viewed that age group as strange little creatures I wouldn't really want to teach, but it was really fun. The classroom smelled like paint, and it was only their second day so they were a little disorderly. One girl cried for her mom which was really sad. Also, it was funny because the same little girl ended up at a table full of boys. One of the boys, Donald, was telling the other boys about how his dad goes out hunting with his friends. And he was saying they killed four-point bucks, and eight point bucks, and probably one hundred and five point bucks. This little girl was just watching him with such an expression of awe. And then he was saying they should all play hunting outside at recess and kill rhinos and elephants! And the little girl looks over and is like, "That is one big, scary boy." It was so funny.
Another sub was telling me at recess how she was in the kindergarten across the hall and they were explaining to the kids that they needed to have a no-peanut table because some people are allergic to them. So if anyone had a snack without peanuts maybe they could volunteer to sit at the no peanut table. And one of the boys in her class was like, "Well, I can sit there. I'm not afraid of peanuts."
After that I started my other new job, which is working at the after-school program at St. Francis Xavier. I'm only doing that once a week, but it was also really fun. Yesterday I was in charge of the outdoor group, which basically meant I got to play outside for two and a half hours. I watched kids play on the playground and played with a giant ball with one of the boys. I tried to play in the sandbox with one of the girls who asked me to, but I mainly just watched as I have apparently grown less fond of dirt in recent years.
Then when I got back from work last night, Greg took me to the fair! It was the most fun! We pet all the animals and looked at all of them, especially the chickens and the bunnies and the ducks and the goats. :) Greg was super excited to find some particular fair french fries that I had never heard of, he called them butterfly fries and when he found them they called them ribbon fries and they were really good. Also, I tried and orange soda cream float and it was DELICIOUS! And----There were unexpected FIREWORKS!!!! I was soooo excited! They were pretty good ones too! I was glad since we missed them on the fourth of July. =D It was so pretty. We didn't go on any rides though because Greg thought even the ferris wheel looked too scary. ;) But that's okay, the animals are the best part anyway. And we saw *huge* pumpkins and so many weird deformed vegetables.
Then we came back and watched The Fallen which was pretty scary. But we've been watching lots of Carnivale lately, and it has been extremely scary so it didn't give me nightmares. =P
That is about all, I have to head of to the ole Rite Aid again . . . (blegh) Hope all is well with everyone! And I can't wait to see you Mary and Sarah! Only a couple more weeks!!!! YAY!
