When I was young and idealistic, I always felt that democracy and capitalism were ill-suited for each other - although democracy gives everyone an equal vote at the ballot, uneven distribution of wealth gives the rich a disproportionately large say in what happens in government, via
PACs, lobbyists, etc.
Well, as it turns out, you don't have to be a dirty pinko commie bastard to have a reasonably egalitarian democratic republic. There's this method of funding campaigns called
public campaign financing, and, allegedly, it can be done for all Senate, House of Representatives, and Presidential elections in the United States for just $6/person. I'd pay an extra $6 each year to at least partially disengage special interests from the government. Heck, I'd pay $60.
