Weekend accomplishments

Saturday Mom only wanted toast for breakfast because she got invited to like... Phil's home health aid's grandkid's birthday party. Mom frequently gets invited to children's birthday parties, I think because people feel bad for her that none of her kids wanted kids of their own and she never got to be a grandmother. It seems weird to me, but she almost always accepts, so whatever. I guess she enjoys it, and the kid gets an extra present out of it. *shrug*

It was both cold and rainy on Saturday--it never cracked 50°--which is unusual for south Louisiana, rain usually warms it up a little. I went to Thrifty Way, both to pick up a prescription for Phil and to buy Mom's present to Lori. They sell locally-made gifts and there's a whole line of ceramic plaques of local landmarks, and Mom wanted to get Lori one of Shuck's, her favorite restaurant in Abbeville. The one on display was chipped, but luckily they had another, intact one.

I went to Viva La Waffle for lunch, because I saw on their Facebook that you can get a half sandwich now. The full sandwiches are too much food, especially if you get the garlic butter waffle fries. And if you're there, you're getting them, because they're even better than the sandwiches. So I got a half classic, which is like their knockoff of the Popeye's sandwich but served on a waffle, and some fries, and it was the perfect amount of food.

I went to 3 different Little Free Libraries that were near Viva La Waffle and left a book in each one. It was kind of a hassle because it was cold, it was rainy, traffic sucked, and the neighborhoods the libraries were in didn't have street parking. But I had the books with me and I'd already put off getting started on the distribution a couple times. I'll do 3 each Saturday until I've given all of them away, there's about 12-15 books altogether.

I went to Rouse's, and when I got home my mini fridge had been delivered. So after putting away the groceries, and starting a load of my face towels, I cleaned the bathroom counter, throwing out anything on my side that was old or expired or just never got used. I set up the fridge, although the only things in it now are a couple of sheet masks and a bottle of toner. I decided I'm 50 now and should have something approaching an actual skincare regimen, so I'm doing micellar water, a mild foaming cleanser (the CVS Cetaphil knockoff), and (alcohol-free) toner. Nothing crazy.

I'll have more stuff to put in it after Christmas, since Mom is buying me a bunch of skincare. Everything that doesn't need to be refrigerated is in a woven grass basket from South Carolina (Mom bought a bunch of those from the Gullah sellers last time she and Phil went there). The bathroom has a really long counter and only one sink, so David and I have tons of counter space; he gets the left of the sink and I get the right. He has room for a whole coffee service on his end.

David made sandwiches with leftover pulled pork and coleslaw for supper, and afterwards I watched a documentary about the Bitfinex hackers; I knew most of the story--mostly because Heather Morgan's ridiculous alter ego "Razzlekhan" made it the kind of thing I would know about. But some of it was new information, like that there's a conspiracy theory that Ilya Lichtenstein's father was the actual hacker. I agree it's hard not to look at Morgan and Lichtenstein and think "Really? Those idiots??"

Sunday I made bacon, eggs, and toast for breakfast. There wasn't a new Dateline, so I watched the last episode of Glitter and Greed, the Prime docuseries about Lisa Frank, which I started earlier in the week. Again, I knew a lot of it already, because of the 2013 Jezebel article Inside the Rainbow Gulag; Tracie Egan Morrissey was a prominent talking head in the series. But the last episode was about things that have happened since it was published, so that was new.

Like a lot of Gen X girls, I collected stickers in the 1980s, and I had a fair amount of Lisa Frank stickers. But the style wasn't as crazy as it got in the 1990s; they were still brightly colored and there were lots of unicorns and whatnot, but Millennials probably have different memories of Lisa Frank than I do. They were only stickers, too; by the time LFI started selling branded Trapper Keepers and all the rest of it, I'd aged out of it.

I changed and washed the bed sheets, did a load of laundry, baked the double apple cake (applesauce in the batter and thinly sliced apples on top) from Snacking Cakes, ran some diluted vinegar through my diffuser, vacuumed the living room rugs, did some dinner prep, made some pickle dip for my lunch this week, had some wine and came like, 20 pages from finishing Black House. We have a bunch of chicken breasts in the freezer because they were on sale a couple weeks ago, so I made chicken piccata for supper.

I tried to work on the orrery after supper but I was exhausted and afraid of making a mistake, so I gave up and finished Black House, then watched Dune: Prophecy. I still don't love it, but there's only 2 episodes left. Might as well finish the season, but if it doesn't grab me by the end of it I probably won't go back for season 2 (if there is one).

black house, tv od, foodie, razzlekhan, skincare, bookaholic, pickle dip, viva la waffle, bitfinex hack, glitter and greed, dune: prophecy, little free library, snacking cakes, lisa frank
