Weekend accomplishments

Saturday I made breakfast for the 'rents and myself, Mom bought more farm fresh eggs during the week. I went to CVS, Walmart, and Rouse's; I had to go to the Rouse's on Johnston, which I don't like as much, because Youngsville was having their parade. The route goes right around the neighborhood where that Rouse's is and I have gotten tangled up in it more than once. Although I wonder if they had to cancel, because it rained most of the day (so I also skipped the carwash).

I cleaned up the kitchen a bit and made lunch for the 'rents and a couple of greyhounds and a snack for myself, and washed the clothes I'd bought at Walmart (I can't stand wearing new clothes until they've been washed). I did some journaling and prepped my planner for March, then I read for a while. I finished Killers of the Flower Moon, which I had decided to read again. The movie has a very different format than the book; the book presents the murders as this mystery which Tom White eventually (mostly) solves, but in the movie you always know who's killing the Osage and why. I know the script was rewritten from the original version, and I'd guess the original version followed the book's structure more. I assume at some point, probably due to influence from the Osage Nation, they realized Mollie should be the center of the story. Both structures worked, honestly, but it's really about the Osage and not the FBI so I think that was the right decision for the film.

I started reading Demon Copperhead, which I got for Christmas. It's pretty bleak so far! You know what it almost immediately made me think of was Laura Albert's like, Appalachian poverty porn. Like this is the kind of book she was trying to write as JT Leroy, but she doesn't have Barbara Kingsolver's raw talent.

David made fried pork chops for supper, and afterwards I couldn't find anything to watch--I still haven't seen either Barbie or Society of the Snow, but I wasn't really in the mood for either one. (SofS I'll need to watch when I don't feel like painting, because I'll need to pay attention to the subtitles.) So I decided to pull the trigger on a re-watch of Rome I've been thinking of ever since Ray Stevenson died. God damn, I still love Atia of the Julii so much, and I don't know why. She's kind of a terrible person! I guess it's just that Polly Walker is such a charismatic actor. I remember I kept thinking surely she was going to experience some kind of terrible downfall, and she really never does. She calls the wife of Emperor Augustus a "vicious little trollop" to her face in her final scene, it's fucking amazing.

Sunday I made pancakes for breakfast, which I should really do more often because we have an electric griddle and it's very easy to make 3 or 4 at a time and have them all cook very uniformly. I mean look at these beauties:

No throwing away the first pancake with an electric griddle. I used Bisquick, but it's the "fancy" version, where in addition to eggs, milk, and vegetable oil you also add vanilla extract, sugar, and baking powder (so they come out fluffier).

After breakfast I vacuumed downstairs, changed and washed the bed sheets, watched Dateline and painted a bit. After I showered I had to run to Super One for heavy cream, because our stupid fridge still isn't fixed and the cream has frozen and thawed so many times over the past couple of weeks that it had to be thrown out. In the afternoon I made lunch for the 'rents, made a pie, did some dinner prep, read and drank wine.

I made the leek fritters with lemon garlic cream from the first Smitten Kitchen cookbook, which I haven't made in a while. Since the electric griddle was still out, I just used that, I brushed it with olive oil first. It worked really well, and since it's much bigger than a pan I was able to do them all in the just 2 batches. I should use that griddle more often, especially during the holidays when I'm often cooking breakfast for twice as many people as usual. It has to be stored under the 'rents bed because there isn't room for it in the kitchen, and I think I just forget we have it because of that. (I always have to clean dog hair off it before using it.)

Dessert was the Valentine's cream pie from Baking Yesteryear:

I know supermarket maraschino cherries are awful and artificial and not the real thing, but I cannot stress enough how much I do not care. I love them, I love desserts that center them. They're like, one simple uncomplicatedly pleasant thing that I associate with childhood. I was going to make this next Sunday, since that's the Sunday closest to Valentine's Day, but then I realized it's Superbowl Sunday. I always make a Texas sheet cake for the Superbowl.

After supper I watched more Rome until it was time for True Detective: Night Country. Wow, everyone had a pretty bad Christmas! Except for Rose I guess, who's swanning around her cabin in a beautiful satin dress and cooking herself a multi-course gourmet meal. Introvert goals.
