Self-care Saturday

I got an email from Vieux Carre Candles that they were offering 25% off any purchase this weekend, and I haven't bought any of them in a long time, so I splurged on a couple. I discovered those candles at the twice-yearly local craft fair at San Francisco Plantation, and I liked the first one I burned so much that I went on their website the next day and bought more. They are not cheap, to be sure, costing around $30 a piece (prices vary a few bucks either side of that amount, I guess due to what oils are used to make the scents). But they're very large, almost as big as a full-size mason jar, and they're very heavily scented with really amazing blends. My favorite is called St. Louis Cemetery, and it smells like... bruised funeral flowers and petrichor and ozone.

I went to Lagniappe Records before my haircut today and found a pristine copy of Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, which I haven't listened to in at least 20 years. It's even better than I remembered it; or maybe I just have more appreciation for psychadelic folk rock than I did when I was in my 20s. (Fun fact: NMH formed in Ruston, LA, which makes them local-ish to me--Ruston is way north of us, not far from the Arkansas state line. But I always wondered if the title of their first album, On Avery Island, was a reference to the Avery Island that's 20 minutes from where I live.)
