Weekend accomplishments

Welp, not gonna lie, this weekend kinda suuuuucked.

Saturday I made toast and eggs for the 'rents and myself, then freaked out immediately afterward because I couldn't turn the stove burner off. We've been having trouble with the stove knobs lately, they keep falling off, or going in circles without altering the power level at all, and this time it just wouldn't behave no matter how much I kept fiddling with it. We finally had to throw the breaker to the stove, which luckily didn't have anything else connected to it (like the fridge). Mom called Lowe's, where we bought the stove barely more than a year ago, who basically told her to pound sand because it's no longer under warranty; then she called a number for Samsung, who was also no help.

Luckily David woke up later that morning, and he uses the stove more than anyone else in the house so he was able to get it turned off.

I went to the post office for stamps, then to CVS, the carwash (just to vacuum), and Rouse's. I made lunch for the 'rents after putting away the groceries, did some planner/journal/eljay stuff, then made myself a chi chi and read, finishing The Employees and starting Exit West.

David made a pot pie with leftover chicken for supper, and afterwards I got out my coloring book and was re-watching McMillions. Then Mom texted me around 10:00 that the thermostat--which, by the way, is also not that old, maybe 2 years--had crapped out, which means no a/c downstairs.

*heavy sigh* Always. On. A. Fucking. Weekend.

She said she thought they'd be okay overnight; being octogenarians, she and Phil have a higher heat tolerance than David or I (our bedrooms are both upstairs, so we're okay). But I could barely sleep all night, I kept having racing thoughts about heatstroke and how you always hear about old people dying from extreme temperatures. I even told Mom they should check into a motel--Abbeville has a surprising abundance of chain motels, considering how small a town it is. I'm pretty sure it's because if oil company executives want to go out to the platforms in the Gulf, they leave from the heliport in Abbeville, and need a place to stay for a night before going back to Houston or wherever. But she hand-waved that away and said they'd be fine. *shrug* She promised me they'd stay hydrated and I made sure their water bottles were full.

Sunday when I went downstairs it actually wasn't that bad. I think because it was well past sunset when the thermostat died, so the first floor retained a lot of the cool air; and today there's been thunderstorms on and off, which kept the temperatures from getting real high.

So I was able to make bacon and waffles for breakfast, then change/wash the bedsheets and do a load of towels, then some light bedroom dusting. I had to shuffle supper plans around a bit; I had been planning on trying to make the savory cannoli from The Bear, but I didn't want to have the oven on too much. But I also didn't want to waste $15 of imported Italian mortadella. So I made the mortadella mousse and the ground pistachios, and instead of making parmesan cannoli shells I just sliced up the everything-seasoned loaf of French bread I had planned to serve on the side and made some open-faced sandwiches.

This is actually how mortadella mousse is usually served, as a dip or spread, with a topping of ground or crushed pistachios, The savory cannoli wasn't an entirely original idea so much as it was deconstructed and put into a different context. It was like... fancy deviled ham. Which is not an insult, I love deviled ham (it's a must-have hurricane snack).

I had planned on making peach cobbler for dessert and serving the cannoli with the bread and a pre-made roasted red pepper soup. I didn't think anyone would want hot soup, and I didn't want the oven on that long, so instead I cut up the peaches and some strawberries we already had, then tossed them with a container of lemon yogurt to make a fruit salad. And we just had ice cream for dessert.

Good lord, what a weekend. Mom said she doesn't think it's too hot to sleep and that she'll call the handyman first thing in the morning, but I think I might see if Penny will sleep in my room tonight. She's so small, and small dogs have high metabolisms, so she might overheat even if 80-something humans are comfortable.
