Self-care Saturday

I mean technically the next several days are self-care, but when I settle into a routine I like to stick with it.

The only wine I drink at home is pinot grigio, because it's the only wine Mom likes. Which is not a hardship, I enjoy pinot grigio. But I also like rose (on the dry side and not overly sweet) and chardonnay (buttery rather than oaky), so I always have one or the other--or both, fuck it, YOLO--when I use the condo alone. This trip I brought a box of Boca's dry rose.

Box wine has come a long way since I was a kid. Back then it was only a small step above the fortified screw-top stuff.

Also, I always buy Irish butter for my vacation week. One double stick of Kerrygold costs as much as 4 sticks of Land O' Lakes or Rouse's store brand, and we use a lot of butter in our house so I never buy it at home. But you can really taste where that extra money went and I always buy some at TJ's on my way to the condo.

I drove into Mobile today to get embroidery floss at Michael's and plan to start my next embroidery project after supper, while I'm watching more episodes of The Watcher. It's hokey as all get out, but I've decided that's probably on purpose. (I mean, it is a Ryan Murphy joint.) The first couple episodes, I laughed hysterically every time my boy Bobby Cannavale or Margo Martindale opened their mouths.

The condo building is more occupied than I've known it to be during October, which is generally a pretty slow season, after summer but before the holiday and snowbird seasons. Lots of out-of-state license plates in the parking garage from all over the south, including at least one from Tennessee. But also lots from Louisiana; beach towns in Mississippi, Texas, Alabama and Florida are popular with Louisianans because our economic reliance on offshore drilling means our beaches all suck, grimy and frequently covered in tarballs and dead fish. There are offshore platforms here, too, but they're natural gas, not oil. I've actually come to appreciate the fairy-like twinkling of their distant lights in the evening.

However, I expect a lot of them will clear out come Sunday night and it will mostly be locals and a few owners. Hopefully the family staying directly above my unit with the child that keeps sprinting across the floor will be one of the ones that goes home.

fancy butter, third coast, wine, i need a vacation from this vacation, gulf coast, dauphin island, cross stitch, the watcher
