Journal Entry 14

For my research paper, I talked about how one can discover their inner strength through confidence and knowledge. To prove this, I used the book, The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien to prove my points with textual evidence. In life, if one does not take action or toil to achieve something, then one cannot be successful. One cannot be cooped up in a secluded place and be isolated from the outside world, but should set out into the world and discover one’s true power and potential in life. It gives one inner strength and confidence to be able to hold a skill and purpose in life, and to use it to be successful in all circumstances. Throughout the story, and many countless obstacles faced, the Hobbit discovers his inner strength and becomes the unlikely hero in the story. A hobbit, named Bilbo Baggins, lived comfortably in his luxurious hole just like how the rest of his family did, and like any other ordinary hobbit, Bilbo enjoyed his comfortable lifestyle in his hole and prefers to live a quiet and simple life. Then one day, Bilbo goes on an adventure with a party of dwarves. Grandalf, a wise old wizard, volunteered Bilbo to be a “burglar” for the dwarves on an adventure. Bilbo protests and the dwarves also agree with the fact that the hobbit does not seem suited to their adventure. However, Grandalf is certain that Bilbo is useful, and insists that there is more to the hobbit than meets the eye. Throughout the journey, Bilbo became more confident in himself and discovered some things in him that he never even thought he had. In life, one must act and toil to achieve something. One must have a vision in life and allow that to be one’s driving force. Dream big and try to make it come true, because if you try with effort, then you can do it.
