A BREAK FROM ALL YOUR WORRIES
“How does it look?” -Kaoru said in a concerned tone.
“Tsk! Not good…,” Die had his hands covered in black dirt same with the driver and Kenji. “We think it’s the cooling system.”
“Basically we’re losing water, so the engine overheats,” Kenji added.
Frowning, Kaoru looked at the open carcass of the tourbus.
“Is there something we can do?”
“We have to find the real problem and I have to fix some of the things underneath,” it was the driver. Nora approached so she could translate that for him.
“Did you call the hotel, telling them to cancel the rooms?”
“Yeah, I did,” nodded Kaoru to Die.
Shinya was standing three steps away, looking concerned, with his hands embracing himself.
“It’s good to know the show is tomorrow…”
And with that Kaoru turned away picking his mobile phone from his pant’s pocket.
“Is Kyo still sleeping?” - Die addressed to Shinya.
“Yeah,” he carefully approached. “I talked to the staff and in about fifteen minutes we’re all gonna have dinner.”
“That’s good…” - and he turned back away facing the engine.
“Yeah…We’re all here. Stuck,” Kaoru looked into the distance. “I don’t know how long it’s gonna take,” looked at his boots. “Already called. Yeah,” furrowed his eye brows. “We’ll be on time. I already notified one highway service and they said if we’ll not make it out, they’ll come straight away.” Put one of his hands in his pocket. “The equipment is on its way. They’ll reach the venue tonight.” Moved around. The only two highway lanes were empty. “They figured out it’s something about the cooling system.” The voices coming from the staff and people outside the tourbus started to fade away.
Kaoru was on the other side on the bus, the one facing the highway. Hit one small stone standing on the pavement right near the white continuous line marked in the asphalt. “No. No, there’ll be no postponing.” Looked into the distance. “Yeah. I understand.” Furrowed his eye brows. “You just be ready for when we arrive there, ok?” Put his hand on his forehead while speaking to the ground. “Ok. That’s perfect.” Closed his eyes. “Thank you. Yes… Goodbye.”
He sighed deeply. Opening his eyes he looked from one side of the road to the other. He’s head hurt and he started to feel hungry. Taking his pack of cigarettes from his back pocket, he tried lighting one of them. The slowly descending evening dropped its temperature too and added a chilly breeze. Had to turn around to be able to maintain his feebly flickering flame.
Looked at the tour bus. Taking one drag he carefully studied the noisy gradient image of dust covering half of the slick black body. Turned around. It was the sun hitting his vision that made him search for his sunglasses.
The American desert. Orange-brown land in thousands of dry particles. The hands of cactuses in the sky projecting on the far away mountains and big rocks. Different bushes and Joshua trees scattered around. One silhouette among them. Took him more time to focus on it to realize it was there. The halo around his figure underlined his presence more. His strong, determined, worried features began to light up.
Started to take casual steps. The highway, the first stains of land, the inviting warm light, the fading buzzing from the voices behind him.
Under his footsteps the ground would screech. But more enveloping was the screeching sound coming from a passing eagle in the far away sky. Nothing compared with the actual experience of this reverberating echo ringing through his now empty thoughts. Nature claimed all his senses.
Toshiya was three feet away from him now. Standing on the ground, his dark hair was moving in the passing wind from time to time. Didn’t turn around when Kaoru slowed his steps down. Or when he sat near him. His right hand was on the ground, playfully tracing invisible patterns on the dusty ground. He was staring blankly towards the sun.
Kaoru carefully rearranged his jacket so it covered more of his body. Looked towards the same direction Toshiya was.
“beautiful…” - and it was almost a whisper, more like audibly talking to himself. Made Kaoru sigh contently while exhaling one cloud of smoke that melt in the scenery.
The wind ate any sounds and captured the visual.
Toshiya’s hand stopped and then he was slowly getting up.
“Come on. Let me show you something.” - and it was a sense of playfulness there, and genuine joy.
Toshiya’s tall figure overshadowed him from a brief moment, and then, with big wide steps, he started to stray away.
Kaoru looked behind him. The tour bus remained silent and unaffected.
“Come on!”
With his right hand Toshiya blocked the wind from covering his face completely with messy strands of hair.
Kaoru crushed the stub on the ground and stood up. Heard Toshiya saying another thing, but couldn’t identify it correctly because of the distortions. Then saw Toshiya carefully bending his upper half while gently pointing to the ground.
“don’t scare him...” - whispering.
Carefully approaching he looked to the ground. Didn’t see anything.
“there!”
Looked closer.
“do you see him?”
The blending chameleon stood as if petrified among some big rocks. The size of a palm, his skin imitated the texture of its background perfectly. It was a living rock.
Toshiya snorted playfully.
“i think he saw you.”
Seconds went by and the creature stood undisturbed. Toshiya slowly started to turn around and walk away casually. Took little steps while looking at the ground.
Kaoru looked some more. Then when he looked away to take another cigarette, taking the lighter out realized he was gone.
Toshiya was hunkering, playing on the ground with his hand. Went on his knees then. Standing by his side, Kaoru realized he was studying little pebbles; picking them up and then laying them carefully back on the ground. Taking another drag, Kaoru sat down.
Toshiya’s once white skin was now having gentle touches of brown and reddish bronze. His small baggy eyes were moving from one sight to another, to his feet. Finding one white and one edgy cherry light pebble he put them in his beige jacket’s pocket.
Kaoru was silently smoking. Turning his look away from him he gave in to the blurry sunset in the distance. Started to listen to Toshiya’s random low humming.
The far away rocks didn’t give their true scale out. The humongous giants felt the last touches of the day’ sun. In the distance, some tumbleweed moved around carelessly.
In the end Toshiya just sat down beside him. Applying little weight to his back he stood against him. Continued to hum.
His cigarette was still fading away near the ground when Toshiya took it from his hand, only to return it after a while.
The sun almost disappeared and they were enshadowed in cold.
Feeling a small pat on his hip he turned to look at Toshiya.
“It’s Die,” then adding, “I think it’s done…” Then he hastily stood up.
Helping him stand up he offered his hand. Starting to walk away in long sweeping steps he left Kaoru behind. With his hand in a fist Kaoru was still inert.
“Come on!” Toshiya had a big smile lightening his features.
In his hand there was one little edgy rock. Brown, with light touches of shiny bronze.
From the other side Die was waving at them, motioning them to come closer or maybe that dinner was ready.
Toshiya’s back was a white stain on the tourbus’ silhouette.
