Narrow Escape

Remind me to trust my instinct.
Last Thursday I went to a keg party at my friends apartment. The extremely smart guys that live upstairs were the ones having the party, and when my friends and I first walked in it was like walking into another world. I have never been surrounded by so many freshman. Im not saying that in a deragatory way, its just my way of saying I was surrounded by very young people. We knew just a few people there and the party was pretty lame. My friend Ann had to go pee, so we came up from the basement. I opened up the outside door to see if I could find our friend that lives there, and right as I look out I see a cop. Immediately I grab Ann and we go to the boy's apartment upstairs.
Mind you, there is about 50 people downstairs. Word spreads like wildfire that the police are there, so shades close, lights turn off, and people start to whisper. There are about 20 of us in the upstairs apartment. Occasionally peeking out to window, we see people being brought away in cuffs, and eventually mass amounts of people leaving. All the people from the basement.
In the upstairs apartment, we feel safe. We have our drinks, and we are just hanging out and chatting quietly. We feel the cops wont come upstairs because they just found so many people downstairs, why would they bother?
Ann and I are anxious for a cigarette, but we are in a non-smoking apartment. We decide to go in the bathroom and smoke a cig. So we are in the bathroom, the bottom crack of the door covered up, puffing a cigarette. We barely finish it and then we hear a knock at the door. Ann knew it was a cop. Apparently everyone else in the apartment knew too, because no one was answering. 10 rounds of knocks, and finally the cops just bust in. We hear the shuffling of many feet - everybody in the upstairs is being told to leave. We are still in the bathroom.
Five minutes go by, and by now Ann and I are sitting next to eachother on the side of the bathtub. Knocks at the bathroom door. Then flashlights shining through the cracks of the door. The cops are saying shit like, "We can hear you in there!" "Open the door!" "If you dont open the door now, we will arrest you!" We are holding hands, staring at the door, knowing that at any moment it will open. I dont know why we didnt open the door, I think we were just too scared. I have never been arrested before and I really didnt want this to be my first time - getting arrested at some lame freshman party.
The door is locked, but eventually the cops open it right up as if it wasnt a hassle at all. They look at us, I think surprised there werent more people in there.
"Why didnt you open the door?" they ask.
Ann says, "We were peeing!"
"Yeah right," they say.
Ann says "Well... you know how girls are."
And that was it. They just told us to leave. We were the last ones out the door, as we walked out of the apartment, three cops watched us. We stepped onto the porch outside, where a cop was talking to one of the guys that lives there. We walk out onto the sidewalk to find four town police, and even a state police car. Halfway down the street as we were walking back to Anns place, two cops were just hanging out on the sidewalk.
Definitely the strangest party Ive ever been to. Usually they just tell everyone to quiet down, but never have I been somewhere where they kick everyone out, and even arrest people! It makes sense to me now though, because I just found out the city got a huge like $250,000 grant just for the purpose of busting college parties.
Lets hope this trend doesnt continue.
Also, I threw my pack of zig-zags into the shower because for some odd reason I thought if I got arrested and searched, if they found the zig-zags they would immediately think I have pot on me. Which I didnt. But what a waste.
