Politics and emotive language

I was enjoying reading the Irish Times today, when I came across this article

I have always felt sorry for this guy, he has been royally screwed over by the media who falsely accused him of having an affair, and of living the life of Riley at the taxpayers expense. Anyway, I wonder whether I am the only person who upon reading the article was struck by his use of language.

He said: “It was like waking up every morning and being raped,”

There is little doubt that his life was turned upside down, his family was targeted in a very vicious way and it must have been truly awful for him, and for his family.

But raped?

I am sorry, but I find likening an untrue allegation of an affair to a sex attack really problematic. However unpleasant, however much it impacted on his career, his community standing, his electoral appeal or his family it is just not the same as being the survivor of repeated serious sexual assault.

Am I being over-sensitive?
