How does a girl tackle weeds her own height or taller?

Oct 10, 2006 11:35

For a variety of reasons (some legitimate, some not), I completely neglected my two plots at the town's community garden this year. I'm very sorry for this, of course, as I now have a burning desire to garden (or to plan to garden next year). I received several threats throughout the summer from the community garden police--clean-up-your-plots-or ( Read more... )

can you borrow a tiller and till it a few times? or hire/trade someone to do it?

I've thought of a tiller, but I'm tellin' ya these weeds are HUGE! Can a tiller tackle HUGE weeds?

you need loppers! Like hedge clippers, clip them the ground THEN till it in. tilling it after you coudl probably get the roots too, it would do some of the work for you.

If you can get your hands on a scythe, machete, or a pair of those big pruning shears you could cut them all down to knee-height or so. Hopefully that'll kill them, which would theoretically make them easier to pull/dig/hoe up.

Hopefully other people will have more helpful advice!

Hey, how do you go about getting a community garden plot, anyway? (Not that I'll necessarily apply for one, but I'd still like to know just in case...)

I thought a scythe would be perfect, though I've no idea how to use one (I'm wishin' and hopin' it'd be easy) or where to find one ( ... )

I have that same problem with root beer! I'd love to make it from scratch, without an extract. Perhaps we should make birch beer instead, and experiment with adding wintergreen and such?

Re ginger beer: It's not even a wee bit foamy? It might be okay anyway - sniff it and see if it smells ferment-y. If so, I say use it anyway. How long has it been fermenting? Could it be because your house is as cold as mine is? (I fear for my poor ferments...)

Thanks for the info on the garden plot. I'll write myself a note to check up on that in April.

You're welcome to share my garden plots. I didn't realize that one plot was too much for me, nevermind two plots. :)
