Milly Johnson's Here Comes the Girls, follows Ven, Roz, Olive, and Frankie as they set sail on a cruise to remember. The 4 have been friends since grade school, but Frankie and Roz have had a falling out and no longer speak- until Ven wins a cruise and invites Frankie, without informing the others! Olive lives a life that lacks love, cleaning other's homes and taking care of her lazy husband and his invalid mother, Roz has relationship issues as well, and Ven and Frankie have some of their own secrets. On the edge of 40, they set off in search of adventure, love, and lots of alcohol.
I really, really enjoyed this book. The characters were so realistic and the banter and plot were funny. I've never been on a cruise, so it was a whole new adventure for me. The writing made it so I could practically imagine myself sitting down to dine with the girls on this cruise. The exotic locales, the secondary characters, and the situations these girls find themselves in are superbly done. Part of me wanted a slightly different ending for Olive, but in order to leave out spoilers I will only say that it's not particularly how I would have written it, though I do still like the ending. Overall, a fun vacation read- short chapters, humorous characters, a lively plot, and lots of sunshine!
