i spent the majority of the weekend battling evil in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix game, and by Sunday afternoon had defeated Voldemort with only the power of my Wiimote. i'd found the game really frustrating when i first bought it, as i couldn't get the spells to work properly and managed to damage my elbow in a particularly desperate and aggressive effort to cast 'Depulso', but that might have just been an issue with the very beginning of the game as i've spoken to someone at work who's got the game and he found the same thing. it adds an interesting dimension having to remember a movement as well as button presses etc. (the final battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort gets a bit strenuous!) and after Harry arrives at Hogwarts for the year the gameplay really takes off. i loved all the mini tasks, although the Occlumency lessons were pretty challenging, and i took a lot of demeaning insults from Snape before i really got the hang of it!
the scope of the game is really breathtaking at times, you can walk right from the Boat House down by the lake at one end up to the Owlery at the other end without getting a loading screen or anything. it's really refreshing to have such freedom in a Harry Potter game. i'm really looking forward to the Wii game for the Half-Blood Prince in November - apparently they've improved on it even more - there's going to be intricate potion-making including preparing, measuring and stirring ingredients, and also revamped dueling with the ability to dodge attacks using the nunchuk.
this cheered me up immensely this morning. i'd vote this kid in for London Mayor!
and
this completely wins my vote for most pointless gift. i've tried to look at this from all angles and really don't get it. what's wrong with the yellow plastic lid you get free with the pot? what's better about a silver one? it doesn't match the label, it's not personalised or engraved, it doesn't even say Marmite on it!
