in the spirit of Thanksgiving (and not at all because hiddenshallows managed to get an 8.5kg (18.5lb i think) giant organic frozen bird for £5) we decided to roast a turkey last week. this was a new experience for me as the biggest thing i've cooked up until Thursday was a duck. a small duck. turkeys are BIG. after consulting Delia, i slathered vegan margarine (who wants to eat that much butter?!) all over it, stuffed it with Paxo, wedged it into the roasting tin that Debenhams had had the audacity to call 'large', wrapped it loosely in tin foil and shoved it in the oven. seven hours, some basting, two blasts of high heat and the removal of the foil later, it came out looking like this:

i had absolutely no comprehension about the sheer amount of meat on a turkey! after we'd both had a roast dinner and a turkey sandwich, this is the amount of meat we were left with (Laura used two thirds of the dark meat in a turkey korma):

after some consideration of our options, we used the rest of the dark meat in a turkey, stuffing and mushroom pie! we had no turkey-shaped pastry cutter to decorate the top, so we used the next best thing. an elephant!

we'll probably be using the rest of the breast meat in some sort of turkey hotpot stew casserole thing. £5 well spent i say! oh, and i found out in the metro this morning that our turkey had actually been raised with puppies!!! that's GOT to be a step up from free-range. so, Sir/Madam, would you prefer a battery turkey, a barn turkey, a free-range turkey or a happy smiley turkey who's been playing with puppies?!!
