Refugees in Australia #1

Dec 07, 2011 22:26

In recent months I have become very very concerned about refugee and asylum seeker policy in Australia.

Australia is a great country, and we are incredibly blessed to live here! This is a land of immense and incredible natural beauty, and home to just about the wealthiest people on the face of the planet (i.e. (most likely) you and me!). I have a lot of pride in our nation, and I am very thankful to God that I can call myself an Australian.

Yet when it comes to the world's poorest and most vulnerable citizens, the way that the Australian government (and, by implication (and often by more than just implication), the Australian citizenry) and the Australian church conducts itself is inhuman and contemptible. It is by far, I believe, our great country's greatest shame. Recently this has effected me deeply.

So over the next little while, I'm going to try to write a series of posts on this issue. I hope to cover many issues which trouble and challenge me. These include, but may not be limited to, Australia's legal obligations; the attitude of the Australian public; and the issue as it relates to the church in Australia.

I wish I could loudly inform all Australians of the undeniable facts of the matter. Unfortunately probably no-one or next to no-one cares what I have to say. That doesn't matter to me, because my main hope is that I will allow God to inform and challenge me through this experience.
