After an intensely busy period, I finally watched two films this week.
A swedish vampire film called
Let the Right One In and a japanese murder mystery called
Suspect X.
Coincidentally, I missed the first few minutes of both films. The first because one of the persons I was watching with was late. The second because I misread the cinema number. No wonder there was no one to stop us from climbing over the barricade at the entrance of the cinema! ;p
It used to irk me tremendously to miss the beginning of a film. Over the course of the last year however, I have abided by the motto of que sera, sera. It's a much wonderful way to live life.
Let the Right One In was fairly predictable. I expected a lot more, considering the string of awards won by the film. I remember turning to my movie companion early on in the film and predicting what would happened. And of course, I was right! HAHAHA!
This is not a film review per se so I will get to the crux of my entry.
Suspect X is a film that reminded me of why I love watching films. The murderer is revealed in the first few minutes of the film. Yet the suspense never lets up. Unlike your typical Hollywood film, this film leaves you marvelling at its layers, its simple and yet apt cinematography and its perfectly motivated direction.
I can't imagine anyone but the Japanese who could pull off something like this. Only a high context society could pose such a conundrum about love and its various shades of grey.
I left the cinema stoked by the regenerative power of a great film.
Am watching the winner of the Academy award's best foreign language film
Departures tomorrow. Am looking forward to that.
