On Thursday 9 February 1995 at 4.08 pm a 9lb 1oz bundle of joy was bought in to the world to a room full of people drinking cask wine and generally celebrating the birth of another beautiful boy. His grandmother was there, his mum's closest friend was there stopping only to grab the first alcohol she could find in her haste to not miss the big moment. His brothers and his Nonna were both outside, none really wanting to be in the room before his arrival, after coming in to say hello to everyone. His Dad of course was there, as was the private midwife Chris, delivering her second in our family, the doctor (called as the baby had meconium in the liquor and was likely to be in distress), and a gorgeous young gynie in training who came along for the ride. After a reasonably manageable 5 hour labour culminating in the cord being wrapped around his neck just prior to birth, without any drugs and with a perfectly clear head his mother delivered him to the world, overjoyed to have a third son.

From the minute this child arrived he has been sunshine. A congenial baby who charmed the pants of everyone who knew him, happy in his own skin, who grew to be a loving and very loved young boy. Open, honest, caring, individual, able to follow his own path, more than willing to be different if it suited him, able to express himself and his feelings and really talk to both adults and his peers. Although exhibiting the typcial 'youngest child' trait of often being dreadfully disorganised due to years of being dragged to sibling's events and having his early life 'scheduled' for him, as frustrating as it can be at times, it is also endearing and has given him his wonderful easy going attitude. Talented too, particularly with his music and performance skills, able to scam anyone prepared to watch his card tricks or see him wield a pool cue. But most wonderful of all, this child accepts differences in people and sees good in the world in ways i wish we all could, ready always to see both sides, appease the hurt, calm the frustrated and resolve the issues. I am blessed to have him and always delight in his company.

Happy 16th Birthday Matthew Thomas. My baby is a young man now.
