How I Found Hey Mercedes

So sometimes I have interesting stories. This is sort of one of them, a tale of how I found one of my favorite bands, Hey Mercedes.

It started back in maybe 2001. Back then I used to love to listen to college radio, WHFR (HFCC's radio station) and CJAM (University of Windsor's station) being the two I picked up with a reasonable signal. So one day I'm driving to roller hockey in my grandma's car and I hear this song I like. Of course you have to wait like 10 minutes to hear them announce their playlist and even then you can't remember which song you liked, so I made it simple and tried to remember just the titles.

I got home a few hours later and the only thing I could remember was "driving" or "drive." So I hopped on my trusty PII 400mhz machine, fired up the ol' Audiogalaxy (remember that shit?!) and searched for "drive." Tons of stuff came up.

First was Drive Like Jehu, a band that appeared on a great compilation album, (Don't forget to) Breathe. I found another band from that (Fireside).

Another noticable result was Starflyer 59's "I drive a lot" which led me to download more of their stuff, which led to me buying a few CDs and eventually seeing him in concert this past fall.

But the one that caused my path to further deviate was "Please Drive Faster" by then-defunct Braid. I downloaded a few more songs by them which were ok, just enough to suit my budding tastes at the time. I decided to search up more on Braid and first found out that they had disbanded but soon after formed a new band called Hey Mercedes. I Napster'd some of their songs and the rest is history.

audiogalaxy, fireside, drive like jehu, whfr, cjam, hey mercedes, roller hockey
