It's been a bad half-week. On Wednesday, my bike chain was skipping a bit on one of the gears. I figured the chain just needed lube. Didn't think much about it. After I got home, I started making dinner (a pasta casserole). While scooping the piping hot sauce and pasta into the casserole dish, I managed to accidentally tip it. As it happens, I tipped it towards myself and spilled about a third of it on myself. Ouch. It also made a big mess on the floor. After changing, making dinner, and eating it, I lubed my bike chain.
The next day, my chain was skipping slightly worse than before. I got to work okay, though. On the way back, almost exactly halfway, I got a flat. Not a big deal, I thought. I'll just replace the inner tube with a spare I always carry. I then discovered that I hadn't replaced my spares after the last time I had a flat. I thankfully had a patch kit. I took the rear tire off and discovered the source of my chain skip problem. I had somehow snapped off one of the cog teeth on the free-hub (and it was less than half a year old). I patched up the tire and got on my way. The patch gave out a couple blocks from home so I had to walk the bike for the last stretch. Then it was off to MEC to get a replacement hub and extra inner tubes.
Today, I got a call from my dentist. I had been informed during my last cleaning and x-ray session that one of my crowns needed replacing - the fit was slightly off and there was some decay going on under it. They sent in the pre-authorization. As it turns out, my insurance covers a new crown once every 5 years (per tooth). The crown is less than 3 years old so I'll have to pay for it as is. I'm not sure how much it'll cost but most likely $500+.
I'm hoping this is a prelude to some pretty damn good karma coming up.
