there is a dead pixel on my macbook pro's screen that is driving my insane. every time it displays an image that consists mostly of white, the black hole of a pixel stands out like a pus-filled zit on a smooth baby's bottom (where do i come up with these analogies?)... i cannot ignore it. remind me to never ever again purchase a first generation of any future apple product.

this evening, i attended a screening of parking, a film by taiwanese newcomer chung monghong. it's a quirky tale about chen mo (played by chang chen), a man who's ride gets blocked in by a double parked car, leading him on a surreal kafkaesque journey to find the vehicle's owner. most of the film takes place within the confines of a single apartment complex, where mo encounters a cast of blind cooks, one-armed barbers, prostitutes, incompetent thugs and severed fish heads. parking is as dark as it is funny and at times oddly profound. beautiful cinematography, great performances all around and a dope soundtrack of johnny cash and taiwanese minimalist rock. i highly recommend it.

another film that will be playing later this month is tokyo! the collaborative work of michel gondry, leos carax and joohn-ho bong. this is a film that i cannot wait to see. sure it's another gondry project but it's also carax's first film in nine years! and judging by what's been shown, it looks to be the highlight of this year's vancouver film festival (for me anyway).
