"Hugo, you're stepping on my foot!"

"Sorry. Mum, how long do we have to wait in the dark?"

"Not long. Your dad is on his way home."

"You said that twenty minutes ago," complained Rose.

"I know, sweetheart. I don't know what's holding up your dad. But he is outside, and the whole point of waiting for him in the dark is to surprise him."

"Why don't we just go out and surprise him there? If we wait any longer the ice-cream cake is going to melt," Hugo said miserably.

"No," Hermione said firmly. "Let's just wait a couple more minutes. And don't worry about the cake; I put a cooling charm on it. It'll be fine."

"Fine," both Rose and Hugo muttered, neither of them too happy about having to wait in the dark for their father.

Hermione was getting quite upset herself. According to a replica of the charmed Weasley clock they had received as a wedding gift, Ron's hand pointed to 'Home' and she knew Ron was outside. She couldn't understand what he was doing in the yard when he had to know they would be waiting for him to celebrate his birthday.

After a couple very long minutes, Hermione couldn't wait any longer. "You two wait here. I'm going to find out what's keeping your father. And Hugo, don't go anywhere near that cake."

As she stepped outside, Hermione saw a very quiet Ron with his eyes fixed on the moon. "Ron? What wrong, love?"

He quickly turned around, looking sheepishly at her. "Just thinking."

"About?"

"Fred… it's just… I was with George just now, and he was wishing me a Happy Birthday when all of sudden it hit me how lucky I was. I mean I've known for some time that I have it pretty damn good with the kids and you in my life, how can I complain, right?"

"We are pretty lucky," Hermione agreed.

"But Fred didn't get to experience any of this… he didn't get to celebrate anymore birthdays, or to really fall in love, or get married and have kids. I wish he did."

"Well all do."

"Yeah, I know… it just that tonight for the first time in a long time, I realized how much he gave up for all of us. He died fighting so that we could all be happy… and I just wanted to… to thank him… it sounds silly, doesn't it?"

"It doesn't, Ron. Not at all." Not knowing what else to say, Hermione did the only thing that felt right. She hugged him tight, resting her head on his chest. They stay there, hugging silently for a couple minutes until a cracking sound came from inside the house. They both ran inside to find Hugo on the floor all covered in cake.

"What happened?"

"I told him not to get near the cake," Rose said agitated, looking down at her cake-covered brother.

"I wasn't going to eat it all, I just wanted to make sure it tasted alright," Hugo said, licking his finger. "It does."

"Honestly! Couldn't you just wait a bit longer?"

"Sorry, Mum, Dad."

"It's okay, mate," Ron said kneeling down next to Hugo and taking a bite of a big piece of cake that still remained standing. "Hermione, Hugo is right, the cake is excellent."

Hermione rolled her eyes as Rose also made to join Hugo and her father on the floor. Her kids were too much like Ron. There's was nothing to do now, they would just have to do with what was eatable. She pulled four spoons from the cutlery drawer and sat down next to her husband and kids.

"Happy Birthday, Ron," she said, handing him a spoon, which he took with a big grin.
