Chapter 20:
(This chapter may seem a bit strange in the beginning)
“Thank you R2 I love you. You're my best friend.” Kimber said and hugged her R2D2 in her own room at home. There was almost no light, only the light R2 gave the room. She had her own body, her own boyish style of clothing and a red face from crying. What she said she truly meant.
Kimber was in her room, reading a story out loud that was displayed on her computer.
“In the beginning of time, the skies were filled with flying elephants. Too heavy for their wings, they sometimes crashed through the trees and frightened other animals.
All the flying gray elephants migrated to the source of the Ganges. They agreed to renounce their wings and settle on the earth. When they molted, millions of wings fell to the earth, the snow covered them and the Himalayas were born.
The blue elephants landed in the sea and their wings became fins. They are whales, the trunkless elephants of the oceans. Their cousins are the manatees, the trunkless elephants of the rivers.
The chameleon elephants kept their wings but agreed never again to land on the earth. When they go to sleep, the elephants always lie down in the same place in the sky and dream with one eye open.
The stars you see at night are the unblinking eyes of sleeping elephants, who sleep with one eye open to best keep watch over us.” (Source text: KAT-TUN Calendar 2008-2009, a picture of Akanishi somewhere at the end of January)
“It's a beautiful story, isn't it?” She asked her R2-D2.
“I think so too.” R2D2 replied, with a strange manly voice. She treated him as a person, not to mention that R2-D2 actually replied as a person.
Kimber became younger. Now you'd think she's about 12 years old. She was at least 20cm's less tall than usual. But still she was wearing the boyish clothing like usual. She took a big trashbin. One that looked silver, cylinder like, with half of a ball above. She was drilling several holes in it, mounting several computer parts in it and painting the outside white. It looked like if she was making her R2-D2 herself. Somehow all these visions seemed to have a sad feeling. A birthday-like feeling. Alone on your birthday like feeling.
“From mom and dad!” Her mother smiled. Kimber's little sister opened her present. It was something Kimber wanted when she was the same age as her sister. Your first barbie-doll. She was happy for her, although birthday presents for herself ended a long time ago. But she cared about her sister, as long as she was happy. She hoped that in the future she could really become an example for her little sister. Someone who she looks up to. An example for how to become. Kimber gave her a smile and gave her her own present. It was a little golden necklace. She saved a year of money for it, since at her age she didn't get much money from her parents. About one dollar a week must've been it. The necklace was about 175 dollars, a real golden one. It had a teddybear hanging on it, from which feet, arms and head could move. Her sister was really happy with it.
Now she was even younger. About 10 years old. Her room was cleaned up, she only had one normal old-looking computer. It started to become hard to recognize everything. Even Kimber looked girl-like. She went to the kitchen, seeing her mom baking a cake.
“What are you doing, mom?” She asked with the cute childish voice she had, a bit unsure of what was going on.
“Mom is making a cake for someone.” She replied, giving Kimber a smile. Kimber thought it was for her, because yesterday was her birthday and they didn't celebrate it yet. Mom seemed to be really nice and happy too, for once. It looked strange.
A few hours later, Kimber heard noises while playing bejeweled on her computer. She stood up, not able to recognize the voices.
“Everyone, come here for a second!” She heard her mom yell happily. Kimber thought her cake was ready, so jumped up and ran towards the kitchen.
When she arrived on the other hand, she saw a strange man with a little son, about her age in the kitchen. Kimber looked at the cake.
It was a cuboid-structured cake. Looking white because of all the whipped cream on it. There were a lot of fruits on it too. Strawberries, Pineapple, Bananas, every fruit who's name sounded like a song.
In green, her mother wrote a name on the cake. It didn't say Kimber. It said “Logan, 8 years”, with 8 candles on the cake.
“Logan, you can blow them out!” Her mother happily said. The unknown boy blew out the 8 candles and made a wish. Kimber was jealous, really jealous. She got angry.
“Mom.” she walked towards her.
“What is it?” Her mother smiled. The smile her mother gave her probably killed her that day, never ever saw Kimber her mother smiling like that. It hurt.
“Why did you bake the cake?” she asked.
“Because it's Logan's birthday today! Why else?” She smiled again.
“Then what about 2 years ago?” Kimber suddenly asked. Her mother stopped smiling.
“Kimberly, dear, we all forgot about that already... why start talking about it now... and that was not 2 years ago, but 2 years and one day.” Her mother tried to explain something.
“That was 2 years ago, not 2 years and one day. The date says today.”
“Kimberly, don't ruin the mood. Look how happy he is. And it really was 2 years and one day ago.” Her mother said.
“No it wasn't. It was because you were still awake and it was already the next day that you think it's 2 years and one day ago, but it was today.”
“Kimberly, you're making me mad. Don't ruin his birthday.” Kimber really got tears in her eyes.
“I can't believe you take this so easily. You're the worst mother EVER!” She said and walked away, crying.
It was a rainy night, Kimber looked out of the window. Everything in her life was going well. There was nothing that she was missing, except for a happy mother.
She heard her mother crying. Her mother was depressive for several years already. At this night, she hoped that her dad would've been at home. He worked at night, so he wasn't home.
Suddenly her mom stopped crying. Kimber looked at the clock. It was 00h21. At this hour, she normally had to be in bed already. But having a crying mother to keep you awake wasn't that much fun.
Kimber went to bed, thinking everything was over. Her mother's tears had dried up for another night. She took her teddy-bear in her arms and lay in the bed.
The only light and sound was coming from outside now. It was calm.
Suddenly, Kimber heard the door of her room opening. She thought it was the wind because her mother always had all the other windows open in the house. She decided not to bother about it and thought about what was going to come in the future. A family-day out to Disneyland. It would've been the first time ever that they did something together with their family. Her father had planned it. She was looking forward to it. Meeting Mickey mouse, Minnie Mouse, Snowwhite, Cinderella. She really loved all of them.
Suddenly she heard a voice. The voice didn't come from far, as she noticed her mother sitting next to her on the bed.
“Kimberly” she said. Kimberly sat up and wondered what her mother wanted to tell her.
“Your mother is tired. Really tired.” she started. “This may be hard to understand and painful but mommy wants to leave. Mommy wants to leave this place.” she started to have tears in her eyes.
“Mommy doesn't want to miss you because mommy loves you.” she said. “Mommy wants to take you and Deacon and Emma with her.” she said.
“And daddy?” Kimber asked.
“Daddy will come too” her mother said. “But he'll be a little later.” her mother said. “Mommy is going to a really really far place. And once we go, we can never go back. And I really want to take you all with me.” Her mother said. “Will you come with me?” Kimber nodded, as a child didn't knew what she was trying to say. Suddenly Kimber saw that her mother was holding a giant knife, such an expensive cooking knife, in her hands. What was she going to do?
Her mother slightly tilted the knife a bit, having even more tears in her eyes. She looked unsure about what she was going to do. Kimber saw the knife coming closer, but her mother didn't think she saw the knife yet because of the darkness.
Kimber felt her heart pounding as a young girl was standing eye in eye with death for once. She started to scream and quickly jumped out of the bed. Her mother didn't see where she went. But she knew there was no way to escape since she had locked the door.
“It'll only hurt for one moment.” the mother said.
Her brother that had the room next door heard Kimber scream and immediately stood up to see what was going on. When he arrived at Kimber's room on the other hand, it was locked.
Kimber's brother was several years older than Kimber and a total Star Wars freak. Even though he had just entered secondary school, he was always a big example for Kimber.
“What's going on?!” he shouted, still trying to open the door.
“HELP MEEE” Kimber screamed. Her mother tried to stay relaxed.
“It's okay, she's just a bit freaked out.” she yelled. Her brother couldn't believe everything so easely as he almost felt Kimber's tears coming out of his own eyes. He had to open the door.
Kimber's mother knew where Kimber was because of her loud sobbing. She walked towards her. Kimber's eyes on the other hand were better in the dark and she was able to see her mother. She ran around, trying to avoid her mother in the neighborhood. She still screamed, to encourage her brother to help her.
Her brother had it and kicked in the door. The door opened as the light of the hallway shined upon his mother's face. He also noticed the knife.
“What are you doing?” he was shocked and ran towards Kimber to stand right in front of her.
“You're not going to stop me. You'll come with me too.” the mother said. Kimber could only sob and started to froze.
Kimber's mother could see where she was going, so she took her knife and walked over to them. Her son started to shake, also being just as afraid as Kimber, maybe even more. He knew what life was about and how precious it was, unlike Kimber yet. He also froze.
Their mother was close, really close and ready to stab the first one. Although she didn't want to do it, she had the feeling she would feel alone in heaven otherwise. She wanted to take them with her.
Her mother made the first move to stab, when just at that moment Kimber's brother had caught sight of a really thick book on Kimber's desk. He took the book and knocked his mother knock-out.
Kimber was still in shock, seeing her mother fall down on the floor, unconscious. Her brother had quite some muscles for his age. But somehow he also fell down. Kimber looked at him. He was hallucinating, having a hard time to take a breath. The knife was stabbed into his stomach, all the blood flowing out of it.
Kimber fell down, seeing her brother like this. He was dying and he didn't want to lose him.
“Kimberly” he used his last words to say something to her. With his hands he tried to loosen his necklace. It was a silver necklace with a silver little R2-D2 on it.
“Belated birthday present.” he said and opened Kimber's hand himself to give it to her.
“Take care of your sister, okay?” he asked. Kimber nodded, her hands and the necklace already full of blood.
“Go, before mom wakes up, go and look for help. Take Emma with you” he said. Kimber nodded and looked at her brother one last time. She sobbed a few times again, running out of her room to take little Emma with her and search help by the neighbors.
Akanishi woke up. He saw everything. His heart was pounding. Crystal just walked in to have a change of clothes, since she let Akanishi sleep in her bedroom.
“What's wrong? You look like if you have seen a ghost!” She laughed.
“Yeah, you can say that.” Akanishi didn't even blink his eyes. He was looking right in front of him, wondering what all of that was.
“You really had a nasty dream?” Crystal took a seat next to Akanishi in the bed.
“I... I...” He was still doubting about what he saw.
“I think I saw the future.” he said.
“The future?” Crystal asked.
“Yeah, first I saw myself, being a computer nerd, just like Kimber. I was acting like if I was Kimber. Then later it became all strange. I was mother of a girl named Kimber, and I had another daughter, Emma and a brother, I don't know what his name was. And because I gave up my life of the body swap, I became... depressive? Then later I wanted to kill my own children because I wanted to take them to heaven with me.”
“That's quite heavy... but are you sure it's the future?” Crystal asked. Akanishi wasn't sure.
“I killed my own son in it. I really did! I mean... I wanted to kill all of them, but my son sacrificed his life for his sisters.”
“That's...” Crystal didn't knew how to react. “It's just a dream. I mean, it doesn't happen that people kill their children because they want to take them to heaven with them, right?”
Akanishi thought about it for a second. It may not happen everyday, but it was possible, right?
“Look, Akanishi. If you'll be stuck in this body forever, which I hope you won't, nothing like that will happen. I mean, look at you, you've got so much in you and you can conquer the whole world. If you'd be stuck in this forever, start making choices for yourself. Live the way you want to live.”
Akanishi nodded, agreeing with what Crystal said. He wondered how he became so emotional, feeling the tears falling down his cheeks. Maybe it was time to think about what he wanted to do, in case if he would be stuck in this body forever.
