When Tegoshi Yuya begins to tell a story, he’d start off with Yamashita Tomohisa. A prince charming that had yet to find the princess of his dreams.
Then, he would continue with a royal ball, where princess after princess would appeal to the handsome prince and the prince would graciously dance with each of them while a little servant boy watched meekly in the dark corner. The prince would then fall madly in love with the fairest princess at the ball.
They would have an extravagant wedding, all smiles, before they began their perfect lives together, living happily ever after.
And the little servant boy would continue watching the couple. Sometimes, the little servant boy would drown himself in his sorrows, drinking away his spirit, drinking away his heart. Sometimes, he would wave fake regards to the couple with a fickle smile on his face. Most times, though, the little servant boy would cry himself to sleep, wondering every single night why it wasn’t meant to be.
But that was how Tegoshi Yuya would always end his fairy tales; without a happy ending.

Tegoshi grinned as he watched the scene unfold; a long white dress, a large floral bouquet, the blushing bride and the dashing groom; Perfection. He walked over to the couple and congratulated the pair, smiling easily.
“Tegoshi, you came!”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” The young idol smiled, patting high school buddy firmly on the back. “Maaa, it is a miracle after all ne? That Tai-kun would even be able to get married~ I have to witness it for myself!”
“Oi!”
“Arigatou ne, Tegoshi san, I understand you have a busy schedule…” The bride smiled gently, just as how he imagined she would. “Thank you for coming anyway.”
“It’s not trouble at all.” Tegoshi grinned. “I wish the both of you a long and happy life together~ it’s just too bad I’ll be losing another soccer buddy ne? No more late games at night desho, Tai-Kun~”
“Nani? It’s still possible desho~ It’s not like being married would make me a trapped pigeon or anything like that, right, Naomi?”
“Well, we’ll see about that ne, Tai-chan.” Naomi smiled, a slight murderous intent glinting noticeably in her eyes. Tegoshi laughed, Tai-kun was destined to be the hen-pecked husband.
“Maaa, enjoy your honeymoon ne? Where will you two be going?”
“Hawaii, it seemed like a good place to go for a honey moon.” Tai-kun smiled as he gripped his wife’s hand tightly. “And I want her to have a good time, a good start to our new life, you know?”
Tegoshi nodded, smiling happily in reply. Tai-kun really loved her.
“And a good journey towards your happy ending desho?”
“Mmm, Arigatou Tegoshi san~” Naomi smiled. “I hope you’ll find a good passage towards your happy ending too.”
“Mmm.” Tegoshi smiled slightly. “Arigatou.”

If Nishikido Ryo could write the perfect love story, he knew it would go like this. It would start with two childhood friends who would become best friends.
They would spend many days and countless nights together, just being there. They would slowly fall in love, the both of them, and they would continue living all the rest of their lives together.
They would argue and never fall out; they could hate each other but would always be in love and they would always always need each other, the both of them, always and forever.
But Nishikido Ryo knew the difference between stories and real life, the latter rarely produced happy endings.

“And then she dumped you?” Ryo frowned. Yamapi nodded as he downed his drink bitterly.
“She starts to date an idol and then dumps him because she doesn’t feel he spends enough time with her? “ Ryo raised his voice slightly as if to prove his point. “What does she think an idol does? Smile and look pretty and then spend all his time with his girlfriends? She’s kinda stupid.”
“Don’t call her stupid.” Yamapi frowned. “And anyway, I didn’t really expect her to understand.”
Ryo sighed irritably, slightly annoyed at the fact that the younger boy was defending the girl who betrayed him. But perhaps that’s what he liked about Yamapi in the first place, the trusting nature the younger boy possessed and that constant carefree attitude.
“Maybe they were right.” Yamapi sighed, leaning backwards onto the couch, sliding down onto the floor and landing right next to the older boy. “Maybe you should marry your best friend.” The younger boy turned to stare at Ryo who felt himself blush as those eyes bore into him. “You understand me.”
“Ba…Baka, don’t be an idiot.”
“I wasn’t trying to be.” Yamapi shrugged as he poured himself yet another glass of beer.
“Whatever, let’s just drink until we wake up in our vomit tomorrow .”
“You’re so disgusting, Ryo chan.”
“Still want to marry me?”
“Maybe.” Yamapi yawned, taking a particularly large sip from the glass before leaning towards the older boy, coming to rest onto his shoulders and promptly falling asleep. Ryo sighed, placing his head onto the younger boy’s, taking a long deep breath of that familiar shampoo.
“It must be the alcohol talking.” Ryo muttered into Yamapi’s ear softly, sure that the young idol was already asleep. “You wouldn’t love me.”
Ryo took another large glass of alcohol before encasing the younger boy in his arms, knowing that that was all that the boy needed.
“I know you can’t.”

The next day, Ryo woke up to an empty bed; hangover still drilling determinedly into his head. He rubbed his eyes and stretched. The younger boy was no longer there, of course, that was to be expected for it was the trend. Sometimes he wondered if their friendship was like tissue paper, used up and thrown away, essential and yet useless. He smiled at the note on the table, the apology for leaving early, the thank you for being a good friend.
It was on days like these that he feels like writing. He stepped tiredly into his room and dragged out his guitar, strumming chords. An F that glided into a G and then to a C that rounded itself off with an A. A melody that bordered on neutral, sometimes dipped its toe into being sad before returning to what it was, Ordinary. Comfortable; that was what it was, that was what they were. He smiled, making a mental note to remember what it sounded like, but knowing he’d never forget.
His fingers moved on their own as familiarity danced across those strings. He knew where each string was, what each note felt as they resonated on the tips of his fingers, but what sound came out sometimes surprised him. The younger boy liked to give them, surprises; he was well practiced in false hope. Whether intentionally or not. He decided he was satisfied with the tune and walked to the table on which the note lay.
He sat down and smiled as his pen scrawled surprisingly easily across his page, words from the heart that bordered on neutral, occasionally dipped its toes into being painful but always staying ordinary. He wonders sometimes if it was bad to feel so accustomed to pain, being able to talk about it like it were normal and expected.
He smiles, he feels ordinary.
This was all just an ordinary day.

“Dakara~ Massu, I’m begging you~~~ Please?” Tegoshi pulled the biggest pout he thought was humanly possible to pull. “Just one night a week?”
“Demo, Tegoshi, I’ve been kinda busy.” Massu frowned, tapping softly at his timetable. “The drama’s been keeping me busy.”
“Ah, sou.” The disappointment was clear on the youngest member of NEWS. Massu let out a guilty sigh.
“Maybe I can spare a Monday, if you want.” Massu forced a smile onto his face. “But it won’t be early.”
“Dame, you need your rest.”
Tegoshi started as he heard the familiar voice sound from behind him. Yamashita Tomohisa, he blinked as he felt the older boy’s hands on his shoulder and saw the reprimanding look on his face.
“Yamashita Kun, what are you doing here?”
“I have a meeting with my manager.” Yamapi frowned, nodding slightly at Massu’s direction. Massu smiled slightly.
“Ja, Gomen Yamashita Kun but I have filming to get to…”
“Ja ne, Massu.”
“Hai~ Tegoshi, I see ya later.” Massu waved. “Why don’t you ask Yamashita kun to go with you instead? I bet he’ll be happy to do that.”
“Eh?”
“Go where?” Yamapi frowned.
“Ja~” Massu laughed, waving frantically before escaping the room swiftly, leaving Tegoshi with Yamapi who had a confused frown on his face.
“Go where?”
Tegoshi laughed sheepishly.
“Soccer.”
“Soccer?”
“You see, my friend from high school, he used to play soccer with me once a week at night after work. It helped keep me in shape and I guess it took the stress off. He’s just gotten married recently and now I’m left with no one to play with.” Tegoshi pouted.
“And so you tried to cajole Massu into playing with you?”
“Ha-ha.” Tegoshi giggle awkwardly in reply, much to the amusement of the older boy.
“What time do you normally play?”
“Eh, 10 or 11 at night, sometimes later…” Tegoshi frowned. “Nande?”
“Ja, I’ll meet you at 11 tonight.”
“Eh?”
“Anyway, I need to go, I have a meeting, I’ll call you later.”
“Eh?”
“Ja~”
The older boy had left the room and Tegoshi blushed, slightly excited, very nervous and deliriously happy. Perhaps this was his chance, his ticket to the ball.
Perhaps life was a journey towards your own happy ending.
