There are French Emmanuelle movies and there are Italian Emanuelle movies
How do you tell the difference?
Class?
Anyone?
That's right. The French Emmanuelle movies have two m's, and the Italian ones only have one. The film industry term for that in America is "smartass lawyer manuevering." The only real Emmanuelle movies are based on the original book "Emmanuelle," by Emmanuelle Arsan, which is supposedly a true account of this French wild woman who hung out in Thailand with her incredibly understanding diplomat husband, who didn't care who she went to bed with because he believed in "free love," and a bunch of other rich French people who lived in Southeast Asia and liked to do two things: a) have sex, and b) make long boring speeches about the meaning of sex.
De Gaulle himself hated this book so much that he tried to get it banned, and in the course of defending it the publisher had to admit that there was no Emmanuelle Arsan and that the book had been written by a guy named Maryat Rollet-Andriane. De Gaulle never got the book banned, but by the time the film version came out in the early seventies, the new French president, Georges Pompidou, tried to get the movie banned. Of course, it was one of the most successful French movies of all time, making a superstar out of Sylvia Kristel, who was just as good at sex as she was at the long boring conversations with "Mario" about "love and fulfillment."
Sylvia Kristel made two sequels, jetting around the world sleeping with everything that moved, and fortunately philosophizing a lot less, and then she had plastic surgery in South America--I'm trying to remember the plot point here but it's eluding me--and emerged in "Emmanuelle IV" as Mia Nygren.
Meanwhile the Italians decide they want their own Emmanuelle movies, but they'll be caught dead if they're gonna watch any French subtitles, so they hire Laura Gemser to make a series of one-m Emanuelle movies, including "Emanuelle Goes to Africa," in which we're supposed to believe that she's black even though she doesn't look black enough to be African. And then they get sort of carried away and start slapping together one-shot Emanuelles like "Emanuelle Goes to Hong Kong" that don't have Laura Gemser or Sylvia Kristel in them, and then they freak out entirely and start putting the Emanuelle name on movies that don't have a character named Emanuelle in them or any reference to Emanuelle but do have a whole lot of aardvarking around on the beach.
The result is that we have about thirty Emmanuelle and Emanuelle movies, and probably 15 women who have done the big E, not to mention the big O. And the basic idea in all the French ones is that Emmanuelle is this free spirit who teaches everyone in the world to get rid of all their sexual hangups, and the basic idea in all the Eyetalian ones is that Emanuelle is horny.
Now along comes a producer named Alain Siritzky and he gets the rights to the original book and he makes seventeen--yes, that's what I said--seventeen Emmanuelle "episodes" that he sells to European cable, and in the process he slaps three or four episodes together and makes Emmanuelle films that eventually make it over to the U.S., thanks to low-budget pioneer Roger Corman, and the first three episodes, starring Krista Allen, are called "Emmanuelle in Space: A World of Desire."
Are you following this?
Krista Allen is a model, "Baywatch" girl and former Miss Texas who is best known for three years as the abused babe "Billie" on the soap opera "Days of our Lives." After seeing her in this flick, however, I doubt that Proctor & Gamble will be hiring her for any endorsements, and I only have one word to say: Yowza!
She channelled Sylvia Kristel.
We join Emmanuelle in her new home on a spaceship where she's teaching a race of Spock-like aliens what "sexual human desire" is. Thanks to a transmutation zapping device, she can materialize in any location on Earth long enough to rip off her clothes, mouthe a few platitudes about "love," and make sure every male in the cast makes the sign of the quadruple-finned walrus with every woman in the cast. She saves the choice morsels, like the King of the Gypsies, for herself, and solves all the jealousy problems by . . . having more sex, of course. The aliens monitor everything from aboard their spaceship, occasionally transporting themselves to Earth for scientific studies. Typical exchange: "I care not!" "Refrigerate him!" "How are those vectors coming?"
Yes, it's that curious survivor from the seventies--the sex movie with very little sex in it. In this world of hard-core porn, it's nice to see old-style French family values reemerging.
Forty-five breasts. Multiple aardvarking. Tantric Tibetan monks, beating with gongs with sitars. Chinese Communist Commissar initiation. Gypsy-girl sponge bath. Hot gypsy sex, with 360- degree Hitchcock camera. Gratuitous Kama Sutra. Gratuitous whinnying horse soundtrack. Gratuitous gypsy festival. Drive-In Academy Award nominations for Paul Michael Robinson, as the alien spaceship captain, for saying "You have shown me the meaning of the word 'arouse'"; Steve Michaels as the obligatory jaded voyeur photographer (why do they always have beards?) who says "Welcome to the Pleasure Palace"; Jon Kada, as the wide-eyed alien who gets a thing for the stable girl, for saying "I cannot, Emmanuelle, I feel a need to seek beyond"; Tami Simsek, as the obligatory French maid, for her two enormous talents; Angela Cornell, as the stable girl who learns that once you've had an alien, you can't go back; P.S. Sono as the 300-year-old abbot who says "We need a pair to radiate the purest tantric energy"; Debra Beatty, as the foxy alien who says "Arousal by images--I have experienced it"; and, of course, Krista Allen, as the most inspiring Emmanuelle since Sylvia Kristel, for saying "Gypsy men fascinate me." Begging the question: what men don't?
