Five Mirandy Moments - the iTunes Meme

Feb 13, 2009 08:15

Authors Note:  The Devil Wears Prada and it's characters aren't mine.  Neither are the songs, everything else is.  This is a response to the iTunes meme although I cheated a little bit and skipped several instrumental pieces as well as pausing after each song to finish the ficlet.  I just don't write fast enough to have finished any of these in the three to five minutes allotted.  Also these are unbetaed.  Hope you all enjoy.

1. Frog on my Toe - Tori Amos

Miranda wasn't entirely happy.  She did some crazy things these days because Andy or occasionally the girls talked her into them, but wading wasn't something she ever would have done without that prompting.  The creek they were in was in the mountains, and it was nicely cool in the summer heat.  But still, how could they expect her to put up with the sand and mud.  When they got to the waterfall she got out of the water with a put upon sigh.  She lay back for a moment and suddenly felt something alive touching her feet.  She bolted upright with a screamlet sending the frog flying back into the water.  Then she looked up and discovered that Andy and the girls were laughing so hard they could barely stand.  Her first impulse was to harrumph loudly and ignore them, but as she started to turn away Andy caught her eyes and her smile was so beautiful that Miranda forgot all of her germinating plans for revenge and found herself lunging into the creek and planting a serious kiss on Andy that sent both of them falling beneath the surface.  When they emerged, the girls had fallen over themselves from laughter and Miranda found herself at the center of her family as they all emerged soaked and grinning from the water.
She would have preferred to do this in a pool, but the smiles made the mud and sunshine worth it.

2. Clog Medley - Leahy

Miranda watched in astonishment as Andy joined into the frenetic dancing in front of her.  Who would have imagined that she could do that kind of footwork.  It was amazing, Miranda would have too learn this too, it would be a good thing to do it with her.  Still perhaps they could start with something a little more dignified.
Just as she was thinking that, Andy grabbed her out of the crowd and pulled her into motion.  It was surprisingly fun and she found herself losing her inhibitions.  That beer earlier had helped, but she hadn't expected to find Andy's sister's wedding so much fun.

3. Christmas Carol - Nerissa & Katryna Nields

A year ago Andy couldn't have imagined this situation.  She was going to visit her parents for christmas and worried about introducing them to two new members of her family.  She wasn't too worried about her new daughter Ruth, but her much older girlfriend was another matter.  Things hadn't been settled for long enough for her to be sure how they would react, so she had decided that she would show up on the doorstep and see what happened.  Miranda hadn't been entirely comfortable with that idea, but since it was Andy's family and they had already had an early christmas themselves she had reluctantly gone along with it.
Andy pulled in front of the her parents house, and she and Miranda got out of the car and Miranda got Ruth out of the back seat.  They walked up to the door and Miranda gave her a reassuring smile as they waited someone to answer the door.  Andy's Mom opened the door and gave Miranda a questioning glance as she and Ruth followed Andy in.
"It's good to see you Andy, aren't you going to introduce your friends?"
"Mom, I'd like you to meet my daughter Ruth and my girlfriend Miranda Priestly."

4.  Small - Veda Hille

They were in a pet store.  Patricia had died a month ago, and Miranda had decided that it was time for them to get a new pet.  She and Andy were going to let the twins pick it out.  Their sole stipulation was that it not be a bird as Miranda had never liked them.  They were hoping that the twins would pick another dog, or perhaps a cat, so they were a bit nonplussed when the twins dragged them over to the snakes and seemed entranced by a pair of small green snakes.  She and Andy exchanged a look, so much for easy pets.

5.  Always With Me - Youmi Kimura (Spirited Away soundtrack)

She had known this day would come, it was an inevitable consequence of falling in love with someone a quarter century her senior.  At least the twins were with her.  It would have been much harder to come to Miranda's funeral without their support.  At least she had gone peacefully.  Andy had been sleeping in the other bedroom since Miranda had had an increasingly difficult time falling asleep with someone else in the bed.  When she went in to wake her, she had realized that Miranda was gone, but at least she had gone with a smile on her face.  Andy had held it together long enough to call the twins and the funeral home, and had spent the rest of the day in tears.  They had only had 30 years together, and even though it would have to be enough, it still felt like they had only recently gotten to know each other properly.
When she got home, she was alone.  The maid had been and left, and now it was just her and the house.  She wandered the rooms.  She wasn't sure what she was looking for, while the house was both of theirs there was still so much of her wife in every part of their space.  Art she had picked out, her books, furniture and more.  Andy stopped wandering in Miranda's office.  It had been more than a decade since Miranda had finally retired from Runway, but she had never lacked for projects.  A glass-fronted bookcase held a number of mementos, particularly hardbound copies of all of Andy's books, and the presentation copy of Miranda's own monumental history of 20th century fashion.  But as Andy sat down in her wife's chair, she found herself drawn to the framed photo of the four of them above the desk.  It had been taken only a few years after their marriage when they were on vacation in Greece.  They were standing on a terrace with flower filled vases all around them and the glint of the sea behind them.  She had her arms wrapped around Miranda and the girls sat on a bench next to them.
Andy must have seen this photo thousands of times, but today was the first time that she realized how closely she and Miranda had been tied together.  While she was obviously holding Miranda, Miranda had been holding her too, with one arm behind Andy's back and the other hand entwined with Andy's.  As she realized this, she settled back in the chair and was startled to feel her wife's arms wrap around her shoulders and her hands holding Andy's own.  When she looked down, nothing was visible, but nonetheless she was nestled into her wife and could even feel her breath on her hair, it should have been scary, but instead she relaxed as she realized that Miranda would always be with her no matter what barriers came between them.
