Some Highlights

Feb 17, 2008 02:13

On Friday, five minutes before the bell rang, my master teacher asked if I wanted to lead Language Lab so of course I had to say "yes." Then in the remaining four minutes before the students came in, I did some mad scrummaging (physically and mentally) to throw together a mini-lesson on verbs. My "plan" was to do a quick review of what a verb is and then work together on two worksheets.

Twenty minutes into the 30-min time slot, we were done so I was thinking "oh crap, what now?!...GAME! but what verb game is there?! crap, crap, crap...20 q's, no...mime rhyme, no...SIMON SAYS!" So then we got a game going with some verbs. That filled about 5 minutes..so I had another 5 left. I decided to do some popcorning b/c frankly, I was on the spot and out of ideas. I chose a student to identify the verb in my sentence, and when she did, I had her come up with a sentence and choose someone else to identify the verb. They passed it along for a few turns successfully, but then of course, some kid had to throw in a progressive verb, and I did a mini tug-o-war in my head about whether or not to go into explaining how "is" is part of the verb and risk confusing the heck out of all of them, but luckily, it was 9:05 and Language Lab was over. Consumed by my relief, I forgot to close the lesson and instead, just dismissed the students who were from other classes. Whoops...my bad, I'll remember next time...

What a rush! I don't think the students realized how crazy it was inside my head, nor did my master teacher b/c she later told me she was impressed by how well I kept the group on-task. I guess I hid the crazy panic well behind a cool, collected facade This was definitely the highlight of student-teaching this week.

Other highlights:

--Meeting Sean, my friend Rhonda's newborn baby boy...He's sooo tiny and has soooo much hair

--Suddenly getting a "thinking about you" call from the person I was just thinking about

--Cupcakes and sugar galore

--Finding out that I MIGHT get paid for part of my student-teaching, and that I MIGHT be able to start my 5-weeks early and be done with the semester by the end of April...fingers crossed

--Learning that Macbooks allow AIM users to synch their status with their itunes...AMUZING!! (that's right...that's amazing and amusing together!)

Children's Center PJ Day pics

We went on a walk on campus with our PJ's

We had some crackers and water for snack. Back at the Center, we turned off the lights and pretended to be on a campout.
