Those empty juice or soda bottles?

Fill 'em with tap water, tuck them into empty spots in the freezer or even fridge, and they'll help keep things cool if the power goes. (No nice strong bottles? A good Ziploc or sturdy trash bag will do.)

Also, they'll be extra drinkable water, if you need it (at home or on the road). And if not, they'll recycle just as well after the storm goes by.

Before a storm hits, I also like to move most perishable foods up to the freezer. Not so much of an issue in winter, when the car will do ...
