Sandy: Storm-surge readiness

Oct 27, 2012 14:15

If you live near the coast, especially in NY or NJ, give a little thought to the concept of storm surge.

NOAA forecasts currently show a 50% chance the storm surge there will exceed 2 or 3 feet ... and a 10% chance it will exceed 7 to 9 feet. That's not counting the height of storm-churned waves.

A lot depends on timing. If the storm surge rides in with the already-higher-than-usual tide, things could get ugly. So, think about it: A 10-foot surge plus a few feet of waves -- is your home 15 feet above the water line?

Chances are, it won't be nearly that bad. But the time to find out that it will, the time to get out if you need to leave, is *not* when it's unsafe to leave the house ... and unsafe to stay.

Just think about it. Just in case. Be ready to leave. Just in case. And if they tell you to evacuate, if they even suggest it? Get out.

And if, on your way uphill or out of town, you are tempted to drive through running water? Don't.
