“I knew that this would happen.” Ryo thinks.
The sound of a guitar can be heard, a melodic tune, played by a talented hand.
Because the ugly duck turned into a beautiful white swan…
The melody echoes through the area beautifully.
But for the former ugly duck, a swan now, no matter what happens…
There is a boy playing a guitar, sitting under a willow tree, together with a beautiful boy next to him, who listens to the beautiful song.
It always feels like an ugly duckling…

“My classmate said that I can’t play the guitar with my ugly face…it would ruin the image of the guitarist’s cool style.” Ryo says.
He is the only best friend Ryo has and the person he likes: Yamashita Tomohisa, Pi in short.
“Eh~it’s not true! I think you are talented when you play the guitar… I’ll support you every time you’ll play it, even though others may cover their ears to not listen and close their eyes to not watch, I think you are wonderful.” Both smile, looking at each other.
“Thanks Pi.”
Only Pi isn’t bothered with his appearance, only Pi doesn’t bother that he is ugly…

But then it changes. Everything, like a glimpse. A time when he and Pi have still been friends. It’s over. It changed in one moment. It happened six years ago and it’s still like a nightmare for Ryo, like he dreamed it.

Ryo walks alone on the street when suddenly there is a cat jumping on him.
“Don’t run!! Chi-chan!!” he hears someone yelling.
-forget it! That was a sad story for me…-
The cat crawls around his legs cutely.
“I’m sorry, that’s my cat. I’m really sorry if it is troubling you.”
But…can Ryo really forget it? It’s so deep inside him, the life he has once lived, together with Pi. When they were still kids, when they were still best friends.

“Hi Ryo! You look so sad…what’s your problem?” his co-worker asks in concern.
“You can’t help this time,” Ryo answers, looking away from Jin.
-Can I forget it easily?-
“How dare you underestimate my judgment,” Jin complains when he captures Ryo’s shoulders.
“Jin …okay…okay…I’ll tell you,” Ryo pushes Jin away. “I saw Pi today,” he finally admits.
Jin is silent when hears Pi’s name. It’s been a long times since he heard that name. “Pi? Are you sure it was him? The one you loved before when you were in school?!” Jin asks carefully.
“Yup…there is no doubt about what I saw.”
“Did he recognize you…Ryo?”
“Nope!” Ryo says in short.
-I won’t forgive him…I won’t forgive him…because he betrayed me…-

Weeks pass by since he met Pi and it’s like it has never happened. He almost forgets about it, his life still goes on as usual.
Ryo has fans now who are following him, wanting to give him their love letters. But there is only one person that catches his attention. He is following Ryo since days while Ryo tries his best to ignore him. He knows who he is after all.
Pi.
Ryo hides when he sees how Pi is approaching him. He can’t face him, not after all the things that happened.
-Did he fall in love with me? Darn…-
“Eh! Where is he? Already disappeared?! Weird!” Pi looks around. He tries to track Ryo who suddenly disappeared.
“Hey! You…why are you following me?” Ryo steps out from his hiding and walks up behind Pi closely.
“Wargh!” Pi is shocked from the sudden approach.
-I definitely don’t want to make any contact with you again…-
“You are… the boy from the other day right? With the cat? Do you have any problem with me?” Ryo looks at Pi annoyed.
“Eh,” Pi feels taken aback for a moment.
-I want to forget you…-
“Ano, actually, I want to find my old friend. He is really great with his guitar, I think he moved somewhere around here,” Pi tries to explain.
“And why do you follow me?” Ryo asks.
“You resemble him…just the face…” Pi looks at Ryo’s face intensely.
“He,” Pi tries to answer, but gets interrupted by Ryo’s stern voice.
“Enough… It’s enough!” Ryo starts to get angry for real. “I think you are mistaken. I don’t know you,” he answers firmly, while avoiding looking at Pi.
-I don’t like to look at that red bandage around Pi’s hand… it is like something I forgot…-
“Sorry,” Pi trembles and he runs away from Ryo.
-What do you think…exactly?-
Ryo just stays still and looks in the direction where Pi ran to.

At work:
“I was waiting back there… and surprisingly… nothing happened…what a waste,” Jun says bluntly.
“Looking at your face right now, you still love him, am I right?” Nino smirks.
“…” Ryo just ignores his senpai and tries to avoid the conversation.
-This is unbelievable…are they spying on me?-
“Don’t be so stubborn Ryo. From what he just said, I’m sure he is looking for his ugly friend!” Jin says it out loud and shows a picture of the young Ryo, from a time when he was still ugly.
Ryo is shocked that Jin has his photo. Ryo starts to get nervous and his face turns red. This is gone too far for him. Jin really is a tease and knows how to make Ryo angry.
-Where did he find that photo?-
“Now you’re really pissing me off!! How dare you stealing my photo!? I’ll going to kill you.” Ryo tries to grasp the photo from Jin’s hand, but because of his height, it’s impossible for him to get it back. Ryo grabs Jin’s shirt and Jin nearly falls.
“Wait…wait!!!” Jin says nervously and tries to get away from Ryo’s killing aura.
“Listen, I got this photo from the café you visited yesterday. You dropped it and I just picked it up for you,” Jin explains.
“Ryo, please try to be honest with yourself.” Jin looks at Ryo who is now standing there, completely silent.

Maybe what Jin wanted to tell him was :
-All this time… and I still love him…-
Ryo searches for his guitar. The guitar was placed in a corner of his living room. It has been a while since he played the last time….
Since Pi left Ryo, he never touched that guitar anymore…it just brings back the sad memories.
Ryo grabs his guitar and his fingers run over the strings. He plays it, their old song.
“I like to hear you play the guitar!” Pi once said.
The music echoes through the room melodically.
“Wait,” Pi tries to say something.
“It’s okay… I’ll get the ball for you,” and Ryo’s gone from Pi sight. “Wait here, okay?”
Everything goes well, he is chasing the ball to bring it back to Pi, then there it is, a loud sound, lights flashing his sight. Everything feels numb…
It was a horrible accident. And it changed everything for them.
Because of this incident Ryo’s face was badly injured…a surgery needed to fix Ryo’s face. When he woke up after a year, Ryo’s face has changed…and so his life.

Ryo starts to use his guitar. He feels that he can enjoy it and be calm while playing it. The sound from the guitar really suits his emotions right now. His fingers play it freely…
Back then he has heard it from the nurse who cared for him: She never saw any kid visit him… Pi never came.
Maybe Ryo has changed into a beautiful white swan, but his heart hurt…
…because of Pi who betrayed him…he left him…

One of the strings from his guitar breaks. The string cuts his finger and some blood drops fall to the ground.
-Ouch! It hurts!-
“Ryo?!” From nowhere Pi appears in front of him. His face looks worried.
Ryo feels hurt, his face is showing it clearly.
“A-ah, sorry… your door wasn’t locked…I heard the sound of a guitar…err…Are you Ryo? I’m Pi, Yamapi?!...Do you still remember me? But…why… your face…” Pi nervously looks at Ryo.
“What the hell!!! I’ve told you earlier that I don’t know you! I’ve never met you. Got it!” Ryo bursts in anger.
“But the tune that you played just now… it was the same tune that you played for me back then,” Pi tries to convince his old friend.
“Enough! Don’t you dare speak to me again!” Ryo yells. “Look at my face…If you really cared about me, why didn’t you visit me at the hospital?” Ryo’s voice breaks when he says this, remembers how hurt he was and still is.
“You are just the same than the others…you just wanted to make a fool out of me. And not only that that…you even betrayed me, Pi.”
“No! That’s not true!!!” Yamapi calls out, tears filling his eyes. “I didn’t even know about it!” he takes a deep breath and continues. “That time, I wanted to tell you that I’d transfer to study in Switzerland… but…but…you never showed up after chasing the ball…so, I,” Pi tries to tell Ryo what happened on that day but was cut off by Ryo’s voice.
“Shut up!!!” the latter shouts, making Pi wince. “I don’t want to hear any excuses from you… why do you even care!?”
“Because…I love you,” Pi’s voice trembles when he says those words.
“Ha..Ha..!! Don’t lie to me?” Ryo frowns. “It’s only because of my face that you say that. Because I’m not that ugly anymore. You are just like all the others…”
PANG!!!
Pi slaps Ryo’s face hard. Ryo startles because of the sudden action and stares at Pi in surprise.
Pi takes off the red wristband from his arm and throws it into Ryo’s face.
“Tsk… had I known that I would be treated like this, I wouldn’t have taken this wristband from you in the first place, I would have never made this stupid promise,” Pi huffs, his heart feeling broken.
Promise?! “W-wait…what…” Ryo tries to call Pi back but it’s already too late. Pi is gone from Ryo’s sight.
Ryo looks at the bandage. His body is trembling and his head feels a little bit dizzy. He can feel his heart ache. He remembers…
“This wristband, a witness of our friendship, that will connect us forever,” Pi smiles at Ryo.
“Uhn…you are right Pi,” Ryo nods happily. He looks down at their hands, tied together by the red wristlet.
“What have I done?” Ryo mumbles, when he remembers. Is there a possibility that Pi didn’t betray him? That he said the truth? That he really loves Ryo?
All this time, Ryo has believed that Pi forgot and left him, that he betrayed him and their friendship…
-Stupid!!! I never thought…that, I’m the one who forgot something that important, our promise…-
-Right now I need to chase my happiness, the person that was missing at my side all the time…-
Ryo gets out from his apartment, realizing what mistake he has made, wanting to fix it again. He opens the front door, but something is blocking its way. When he looks at the person in front of him he sees the familiar again.
“Eh?! What are you still doing at my door?” Ryo is surprised, but bites down on his lips the moment he realizes that he is sounding unfriendly again. That Pi might think he is pushing him away again.
-Shit!! That’s not what I wanted to say-
“Give it back…give me back the wristband,” Pi’s voice cracks at this moment and he reaches out his hand to Ryo.
“You are not my Ryo, the one I knew before. So, that wristband is not important and meaningful to you. Just give it back to me.”.
“Give me your hand!” Ryo orders instead of answering to Pi’s demand. He grabs Pi’s hand firmly and fixes the wristband around Pi’s and his own hand. “Finished,” Ryo swallows nervously while Pi just stares at him in surprise.
“There is a story that I read, a fairytale: If we tie our hands together, we’ll happily live together forever. Now,” Ryo looks at their hands. “Here…I connected our hands with this red wristband. Do you like it?”
Pi looks at their hands. The bandage is connecting them beautifully. He looks at Ryo with a small smile on his lips. “I love it…we will be together forever.”
Ryo’s free hand wipes Pi’s tears away, on his lips his usual sparkling smile that Pi cherishes so much. “Whatever happens next, we’ll stay together forever… I promise.” Ryo hugs Pi, his arms holding his friend tightly. They have lost each other and found each other again.
“I really don’t like you,” Pi chuckles when Ryo kisses his forehead tenderly. “I LOVE YOU!!”
They tighten their hug. The happiness surrounding them is resembling the one from the fairytales. It’s their happy ending.
