We went to see Watchmen tonight, and I liked it. Didn't love it, but I liked it. It was okay. Which sucks, because it should have been awesome. Did I fall prey to the hype machine? Yeah, I guess so.
My gripes, which are all spoiler free:
With the exception of Rorschach, everyone was too pretty. Yeah, Ozy is all perfect looking, Silk Spectre is hot, Dr. M is superhuman, but Niteowl should've been more shlubby.
Ease up on the gore. It's not constant, since this isn't a super actiony movie, but when it shows up it's jarringly unnecessary. Same goes for the sex scene. Too gratuitous.
They needed to be less faithful to the book. It was really accurate, but then to make it fit in the format they eave stuff out. And it made less sense. They could have changed some more stuff to make the whole thing clearer.
Not 1985 enough. Mandy kept asking, despite the journal entries mentioning, when this takes place. With Nixon in office and the Cold War still in full force, it could have used more grounding in the time period. Could that make it a little cartoony? Yeah, but wasn't 1985 cartoony?
Things I liked (also spoiler free):
The look over all. Loved the costumes, the tech, it looked neat.
The flashback scenes. There they got the time period feeling right.
Dr. Manhattan's wang. Not as distracting as it could have been.
Rorschach. Great casting, good effect on the mask, generally entertaining to watch.
