Even though it seems a lot like work, my plan is to plant some corn tomorrow. I don't even like corn. But the polliwogs fell in love with corn-on-the-cob during our last visit to the land of the fat and that's the first and only compelling reason I've had to do gardening. I also discovered that it's very easy to cook on my beloved Weber BBQ. You see, the French don't really eat corn. They mostly use it for pig fodder which is, in my opinion, a very good use for it. If you want to buy corn, it typically comes in cans. If and when you can find it on the cob, it's at least $1.50 an ear. In TLOTF, it's usually 5 ears for $1. So, for the first time in my life, a reason to have a vegetable garden presents itself. In the past, it just never seemed worth it. While I'm at it, I'm going to put out some potatoes. Those are mainly in an effort for the polliwogs to learn something. Potatoes are definately not worth the effort of growing ones own.
Theoretically, I have a good deal of knowlege on making things grow. In reality, I don't really even know where to start and I don't feel like reading up on it. I'm fully prepared for trial and error as a direct result of laziness. So, tomorrow, bright and early, I guess I'll turn over the soil in our garden and put out corn and potatoes and maybe get the polliwogs to make a scarecrow (mostly for fun). Anyway, I'm not expecting stellar results. Our garden is on a slightly north-facing slope. I expect that the corn will do okay if the crows don't get to it and if I can keep after the watering and cutivation. I'm expecting that the potatoes will be mediocre at best.
If this works, maybe I'll do more next year. This dovetails rather nicely with my increase in veggie intake and gradually shifing eco-geo-political views.
