Earth Day Eco Post

So I have gotten better about using more eco-friendly homemade cleaners, but really they are ones my mom taught me back when they were just cheap and easy. Dont get me wrong I still have my regular cleaners but I usually try the homemade solution first. Every house needs baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and salt. (I dont go all into the whole diy cleaners by making homemade laundry soap or anything with essential oils - just the easy stuff)

First the things my mother taught me: ( I am sure there were others but these stuck with me)
- Baking soda is amazing and a paste of baking soda and water will even get red kool-aid off of white counter.
- add salt to brand new clothes the first time you wash them and wash them alone or will a load of the same color (like blue denim) to keep colors brighter longer.
- use hydrogen peroxide not only as a disinfectant but to treat stains on laundry (esp useful if its delicate material)
-Add baking soda to stinky laundry to make it smell cleaner (ex: boy socks or dog blankets)
- use vinegar to descale shower heads and tea kettles. A baggie of straight vinegar, allowed to sit for a little while. To clean kettle add a little vinegar and fill with water, bring to a boil, empty and rinse well.
- cleaning burned on stuff from pots and pans with baking soda and water paste, and if its still not all gone add vinegar (esp good on copper bottomed pots)
- the bags oranges come in or the netting on top of a box of clementines make great dish scrubby things and they are free
- dilute ultra concentrated stuff to make it last longer like I dilute my ultra concentrated dish soap because otherwise I use too much. My mom used to dilute the ultra concentrated fabric softener to make it last longer.

Things I have found since:
- declogging a drain with baking soda followed by vinegar
- window cleaner of 1/4 cup vinegar to 2 cup water with dash of dish soap ( I still use glass cleaner sometimes but the homemade one is great for the shower glass enclosure)
- cleaning cutting board with vinegar followed by hydrogen peroxide.

So if you get on an eco-friendly kick, dont go out and buy the expensive eco-cleaners, make some of your own. You can clean almost anything with baking soda and vinegar.
